Sid Meier's Civilization: Revolution Description

Guiding the path of civilization over thousands of years is a big job. Big enough for the chap upstairs, in fact. While the big fella did a pretty decent job of getting us from the deep dark past of travelling around on the backs of animals to the days of microwaves, cars and toilets that flush themselves, we've all thought that maybe we could have done a better job at one time or another, right? Well, with Sid Meier's Civilization, PC gamers have been up to that sort of thing for years. With Civilization: Revolution, however, next-gen console owners get their shot. The premise is simple - start in the year 4,000BC with naught but a single settler and a military unit or two to your name, then guide your civilization to the point where folk can travel about in undersea trains and make their curtains close by talking to them. Simple, right? Not so much, actually. You'll have to do things like found cities, settle new areas, form military units, build grand civic structures and generally get to work doing the job of someone like Alexander the Great. This console version of Civilization comes equipped with a host of online features such as extra downloadable content and video and voice chat. You'll also find auto-matching and ranked games for those wanting to take on other world leaders online and leaderboards to see how you're faring. The fate of Civilization is in your hands. Don't stuff it up!

Civilization: Revolution is a great turn based strategy which will always have you asking for one more turn! Please download the demo before you get this though, if you love the demo you will love this game. However I cant see me playing it for ever... 4 star

As a fan of the Sid Meier's Civilization series, I was keen to see how well the transition to console was achieved. I downloaded the Demo and found that it was too short to give a full verdict, so hiring through here was the next best thing. I have to say, they have taken all of the overcomplexity out of the game, whilst still maintaining the "Civ" feel. For me, this made the whole game expereince more enjoyable, but there was times when I thought that the game was lacking something. Smooth visuals, presented in a friendly way make this game entertaining to play. It has maintained the "Civilization" soul, but maybe in a way it has become too simple. The graphics, although involving, never appear to be stunning - there were times that it felt like I was playing on the Xbox and not the 360! One noticeable difference between the PC and 360 version is the level of control you have over the game settings. With the PC a whole plethora of settings were available to configure your game to the nth degree. However, the console version has had this stripped out, which has left the game feeling a little too easy (having now completed the game three or four times on ever increasing difficulty levels, I've still found myself going for the space race, whilst the computer is still running around on horses!) Game length has suffered also - I used to enjoy multiple session gaming, where the whole campaign would last for days, but with Revolution, this has been cut down to a couple of hours at most. All in all, I'd say a worthy transfer to the console, but I think that if you have some prior experience of the PC version of this game, you could quickly get bored with the console version. The possibility of downloading additional packs over Xbox Live in the near future could extend the life of this game. I for one look forward to these packs.
