Haze Description

Someone once possibly said, "football, it's a game of two halves." It is indubitably true. Just as it's true of the Beautiful Game, it's also true of Haze. Or, as Free Radical likes to tell us, it's two games in one. You have to play as Mantel Troopers, private soldiers doing the work of the Mantel Corporation in all their neon glory. Then you have to play as the rebels they're fighting in a South American backwater country, The Promised Hand. It's as a Mantel Soldier that you begin Haze, under the name of Shane Carpenter (formerly Jake Carpenter, wonderful how things change through the development process, isn't it?). If you've seen anything of Haze before reading this, you'll know that the defining feature of playing as a Mantel Trooper is Nectar. Nectar is, in essence, a performance enhancing drug (and key element of the plot). It has numerous features - the most immediate being that your enemies glow in a somewhat sinister fashion. The next most obvious feature is that you get a noticeable spring to your step when you're on the stuff. As there's no sprint button and your enemies aren't slow to take a pop at you, it's a welcome feature. Nectar gives you the mysterious ability to pre-empt explosions. Just before something goes boom, you'll see a ripple emanate from of it. I'm not sure how the science of drugs making one precognitive works, but ours is not to question why. Throw in increased strength and speedy healing, and Nectar's doing alright by you. Nectar comes with a catch, however. Pump too much into your body and you'll overdose. The result is a distinct loss of control. But Haze is a game of two halves! Halfway through the game you'll switch sides, and a whole great bunch of new, Nectarless tactics come into play. You'll try to push the Mantel Troopers into overdose by creating clouds of Nectar around them, sticking a knife dipped into the stuff in their guts, or putting a well-placed shot to their supply. Throw in sneaky tactics like playing dead, planting mines and stealing weapons and you have what is essentially a different game. Haze comes packaged with a four player co-op option that allows you to play right through the single player campaign with your mates and a bounty of multi-player options. So... it's a game of two halves and then some.

Disappointing. Elements of promise scattering throughout a poor game. The shooting component is very solid as one would expect from free radical design but there is practically no atmosphere to compell the player to continue through the story. This is somewhat alleviated when playing co-operatively especially with 4 friends and the online deathmatch really highlight the excellent controls and provide a glimpse of what the game could have been like. Unfortunately unlike call of duty, rainbow six and even resistance there is no progression online. I love free radical design and the ideas behind haze so with high expectations comes great disappointment.

pretty average game to be honest nohing special in terms of online features and gameplay is pretty flat. worth playing though as it has an immersive and interesing storyline.

for a free radical game this game is not well made the story is o.k but the game is way to short at only 5 hours and for a ps3 game the graphics are not very good

Very dull and online is no too good. The shooting is not very polished. A far cry from COD 4.

very dissapointing game. It has no heart, no intense story line very easy and very short. You get lumbered on a flying aircraft carrier stampeding through a jungle, why?...where is it going?...no one knows... and just start killing villagers whilst getting high on yellow sap!!....On a evolutionary note your player analyses the fundemental differences between apes and hunters...hmmm interresting!!!... The last"boss" if you call it that as there are no bosses you can kill in a single bullet. The enemy doesnt seem to realiate or fire in a straight line. The choice of weaponry old and repetative of shooters, rocket launcher, shotgun, machine gun blah blah.... Your team get injured by the simple touch of debris and you have to spend half your time running around picking them up. Ammo doesnt automatically add to your total you have to hold the o button for a while to pick up every single piece of ammo from bodies. The annoying voiceover of your hispanic team mates is enough to pull the trigger at your own head. "For Marino"!!.... Vehicles cumbersome and steering ps1 style. Vehicle graphics a laugh...!! There is no ending, you simply stop the bulldosing aircraft carrier from charging down trees and run off with the rebels yay!!!... Wouldn't give it one star but you know we have to, play dark sector much better game iffy storyline but has a purpose this is just pathetic, another push at results without the process from the creators....
