Counter Punch Description

Though the GBA console is home to a vast array of 16-bit remakes and the usual onslaught of movie tie-ins and generic platform adventures, there are a number of smaller, more niche offerings available that deserve to be played just as much. One such example is Inferno's Counter Punch. This story-driven boxing adventure tells the comical tale of mullet-boy Wade Hickson as he challenges the inhabitants of Big Piney to a round of fisticuffs in order to raise money to get his beloved banger back on the road. It's a story that's far from serious, and the visual style, comical animation and witty dialogue will quickly lay to rest the question of what Counter Punch is all about. Quite simply, it's a comedy within a game. Your attempts to raise funds through violence will see you pitted against some eight formidable and skilled boxers, all of which have unique personalities and fighting techniques attributed to them. The play mechanic itself is actually quite simple, but the proceedings are made more varied by the player's ability to upgrade attacks, learn new moves at the training facility and even buy a helping hand in the ring. Counter Punch isn't the biggest game on the GBA, but it was never meant to be. However, the amusing dialogue and simple gameplay might just warrant a return visit to Wade's world of boxing from time to time. Go on, have a laugh.
