Asterix and Obelix XXL Description

Released for PlayStation 2 in March 2004, the latest game to feature the most famous of French fist-fighting duos has now made the leap to GameCube. Staying faithful to its comic book roots, Asterix & Obelix XXL sees the pair of unlikely heroes resuming their daily adventures of violently defending Gaul from the onslaught of Caesar's Roman army, resulting in quite a grand scale beat-em-up with a fair few adventuring and platforming elements. The plot sees the dynamic duo exploring the far reaches of the ancient Roman Empire, on a quest to rescue their fellow villagers, who were captured by the Romans during an invasion. You take control of either of the two throughout the adventure, with the ability to switch at will in order to take advantage of their unique abilities and thus solve certain problems that may arise. For example, Asterix is quite nimble and therefore an adequate candidate for the game's platforming sequences, whereas Obelix is, well, a big lad and can do stuff like break things. Also, throughout the game's myriad battles, the two protagonists can pair up, combine their powers, and subsequently pull off a wide range of elaborate combos, including such moves as 'earthquake' and 'twister fusion'. As the title suggests, the whole combat element throughout the game is carried out on quite a grand scale. In what seems to be a faithful recreation of fighting throughout the comic book series, each battle you encounter can feature a whopping 70 Romans at one time, so there's rarely a pause for a breather. Also, the game itself is set across six gigantic levels, comprising a total of 49 different challenges. XXL - it's big!
