One of the longest running beat-em-up series since Street Fighter, and developed to compete directly with Capcom's 2D offering in the early nineties, Midway's Mortal Kombat is a memorable game series that is continuing to make its presence felt even today. In this instance, we look at the GBA Tournament Edition. There is one very distinct reason behind the release of this latest Mortal Kombat effort, and that is to provide an extensive multi-player game that offers 4-player simultaneous gaming by way of a link cable. There are several game modes available for more than one player, including a 4-player tournament, arcade play in which you can make wagers, a tag team mode a la Tekken Tag, and co-operative mode, a two on two battle for fighting supremacy. Gameplay in all of these modes remains largely the same as any other in the series. Gaming locales comprise of typically exotic 2D backdrops in a side-on scrolling environment, complete with garish yet convincing characters and animations. The Mortal Kombat play mechanic is the same as it ever was, with special moves and attacks accomplished through a series of directional taps and well-timed button presses. It's all very familiar, but it does take you back to the good old days of Mortal Kombat 2 on the SNES. Additional features include compatibility with the GameCube version of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, a practice mode, gambling features, new warriors, improved player statistics and hidden characters. It's simply classic Mortal Kombat - good stuff.
