Disney Sports Motocross Description

The classic NES title Excitebike seems to be the chief inspiration behind this latest Disney Sports number from Konami. Rumoured to be the last in the series - which has included the likes of Soccer, Basketball, Skateboarding, and Snowboarding - Disney Sports Motorcross takes the form of an old-school-style, 2D side scrolling biking game, in which you take control of your favourite Disney characters and test your skills across an assortment of obstacle-rich, fantasy courses. The premise is fundamentally simple, as is the gameplay - race along, racking up points and collecting gems and 'cool' motorcycle parts. Like Excitebike, the racing takes place across a four-lane track that ventures over a diverse array of terrains, packed full of bumps, jumps and hills. And also like Excitebike, you need to get the angle of your bike right to benefit from the jumps - landing off-angle will cause you to bounce a bit and subsequently slow you down. There's always a handy turbo available should you need it, but don't get carried away because too much of it could overheat your engine. As is the case with the majority of the Disney Sports series, the game features much collecting of power-ups. The power-ups in question here appear in the form of gems - collecting them builds up your trick meter, which subsequently enables you to pull off a range of big stunts that can boost your score or your speed. Filling the trick meter to the top is the way to go, however, as this enables you to perform moves that can hinder the other bikers. The main single player mode in the game is Challenge Cup, which sees you race in all the six stages and go for the championship. Score Attack and Time Attack are self explanatory, whilst Exhibition just allows you to pick your favourite stage and have a quick blast. There's also a well-received multiplayer mode, allowing up to four players to hook up their machines and race together and/or swap items acquired from each race - always a welcome addition.
