Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick Description

The classic camp horror trilogy Evil Dead is ideal video game material when you think about it, what with its abundance of severed limbs, projectile eyeballs, possessed hands and chainsaws. It's therefore no surprise that THQ's series of games continues to grow with the release of its second Evil Dead game, A Fistful of Boomstick. Developed with the full support of the movie creators Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert, and the main man himself, Bruce Campbell, the game casts players into the role of tragic protagonist Ash as he fends off hordes of evil Deadites in the attempt to save the doomed town of Dearborn. As is generally the case with all things Evil Dead, at the heart of the evil goings on lies the Necronomicon ex Mortis, or Book of the Dead - the transcriptions from which have opened up a portal that has brought untold evil to the place. The action within takes place across a number of expansive environments, which include all-new Evil Dead locations and cover a number of different time periods, including present day, colonial and Civil War eras. The gameplay itself takes the form of a third-person adventure/shoot-em-up and remains faithful to the films by combining action, gore, suspense and the synonymous Campbell camp comedy. At your disposal are a number of classic Evil Dead weapons to choose from, including shovel, chainsaw arm and a good few boomsticks (shotguns). A new element this time round is the inclusion of magic, enabling Ash to cast a number of spells that increase his power and range of attacks. In much the same way as with the films, A Fistful of Boomstick is not the deepest gaming experience you could wish for but, in the same way, it's highly entertaining, packed full of violent action and pretty darn funny at times. Groovy!
