Along with the Twisted Metal series of games came a whole new audience of extreme sports aficionados. Men like machines, and they like to see them crash, simple as that. So if you're on the move and you get the urge to do some costly damage to a passing vehicle, restrain yourself and relieve the tension by plugging Monster Jam: Maximum Destruction into your Game Boy Advance. Maximum Destruction gives its owners the opportunity to recklessly drive some 20 licensed Monster Trucks around a series of simple, but well designed isometric environments. Racing is not an option in Maximum Destruction: your agenda is simply to survive the onslaught from your enemies and rise victorious as the last man standing at the end of the battle. Using a Gran Turismo-style game structure in Championship Mode, winning battles earns you cash which, in turn, can then be exchanged for upgrades for your truck. Causing maximum damage in battle can accumulate bonus cash and goodies. But with your newly modified beast come even more formidable enemies. The challenge always remains the same, although you can improve your odds by mastering several combination techniques that include bounce, boost, spin and flip manoeuvres. Random wins and losses are rare. Your success in Maximum Destruction is largely down to your own level of skill and control. It can be frustrating at times, but the game design is never responsible for a poor performance. It's games like Maximum Destruction that make the GBA worth having. It's simple, it's fun and you don't have to play it for an eternity to understand it.
