With the Game Boy Advance now (inevitably) secure in the video games industry, late 2001/early 2002 has seen a recent spurt of 3D developments for the console. The 32-bit RISC GBA seems happy consuming anything that is thrown at it, and Cruis'n Velocity from Midway is the next slice of the delightful 3D cake. As you've probably guessed by now, Cruis'n Velocity is 3D-designed game, and yes, it's a racing game. The above average visual quality of this game will be apparent immediately. Environments have been rendered in real-time and include tunnels, street lamps and walls, all making for simple but believable environments. Statistically speaking, there's plenty to be getting on with in Cruis'n Velocity. There are 11 unique vehicles that include a Mini Cooper and a cop car among others. These can then be raced on 14 completely original tracks that span not just the entire planet, but Mars too! Gameplay consists of Cruis'n Cup, Championship and Freestyle modes of play, but given a link cable, you can expand that to include a multi-player frenzy for all (well, a maximum of three other players). In terms of difficulty, getting to grips with the sometimes unresponsive controls can be quite tricky, but the learning curve is such that the early tracks are so easy, you can't go far wrong. It's all about balance, right? Another top quality title for the handheld 3D collection, then. Can't complain!
