The snowboarding game, now an established game genre, didn't really take off until the release of the CoolBoarders series on PlayStation. But since then, the new age of video gamers can't get enough of 'em, and they've quickly appeared on next generation platforms. THQ's Dark Summit for Xbox is one of 2002's more anticipated Xbox releases. There is something different about this mountain-based adventure that sets it apart from the rest. Dark Summit focuses greatly upon plot development. In a completely original idea, Dark Summit has been designed as a mission-based snowboarding game. Dark Summit's gameplay focuses on Mt Garrick, a peaceful ski resort reserved for only the most upstanding citizens of the region. Snowboarders are strictly forbidden. As a snowboarder, and with the mountain officially off limits, you must evade Chief O'Leary's attempts to remove you from 'his' mountain and rid him of Mt Garrick permanently. Each 'mission' comes with several objectives that must be fulfilled to proceed to later stages of the game. All levels require your snowboarding expertise and you must perform seemingly impossible stunts to survive O'Leary's onslaught. Further areas of the mountain will be unlocked depending the player's performance, and by earning status points, you can improve your rank on Mt Garrick and earn greater respect from your rebellious companions. Dark Summit possesses an intuitive control system that will instantly be appreciated by gamers, and with accurate board physics and a plethora of upgrades and bonus features, Dark Summit is not only an innovative title, but a thoroughly playable one too.
