Overlord Description

Overlord is a groundbreaking action adventure, set in a seriously warped fantasy world. You begin the game as a wonderfully despotic character complete with a small team of loyal minion side-kicks. As areas of the kingdom are conquered, you, as the Overlord, grow in might to become the supremely powerful force, equipped with devastating spells and a devoted horde of toothsome-but-ugly-all-the-same minions at your command. These minions believe you are the old Overlord reborn and will use their skills to fetch, fight and die for you. Throughout the game, you actively control a group of these gremlin-like critters that will follow your every instruction no matter how despotic or - for the Minions - life threatening it is. Only your actions will determine if you will rise to become the new, all-powerful Overlord; it's all down to how much of a bad ass you want to be in order to succeed?evil or totally evil! Played out with plenty of black humour and dark irony, the game sweeps you up in twisted parodies of fantasy characters and scenarios. As the Overlord develops, so does his need for ever more effective armour and weaponry. Giant smelters containing rare metals 'recovered' on pillaging raids can forge heavy-duty weaponry that reflects your growing magnificence. Along with the metals, the odd minion soul can also be thrown in to the forge's fire to enchant new items... a few hundred fiery Red minions tossed into smelter will make for a suitably impressive flaming sword. After commanding minions and conquering the land, the Overlord still has a base to rebuild. At the start of the game, your tower is in ruins. As lands are claimed, artefacts looted and enemies slain, it is restored to its former glory as your imposing Dark Tower, inhabited by hundreds of minions. Within the Dark Tower is the Throne Room; from here, you can travel to and from the outside world via the Tower Portal. Down in the Dungeon, specimens of defeated enemies are kept in readiness for the Overlord and your minion horde to have a bit of fun with. Meanwhile, in the Overlord's Private Quarters, take a break from world domination and enjoy the company of your mistress. Ooh!

good game

The whole minion thing is fun and fresh for a while but really should have been pushed a lot further. 90% of the game involves you just doing things without really knowing why and for no rewards that match the tasks.

The voice acting is pathetically bad, which lets the game down a lot, leaving it with an amateurish feel, which isn't much aided by game's animation.

There's a lot that can be done in the game, such as gradually making and improving weaponry and armour (ordering the relevant minions to dive into the smelter and die, would be more amusing had the joke not been used forever throughout the game), or upgrading your evil castle/tower, but whatever you do in the game you're left wondering if there's much point and what effect any of it is having on the gameplay.

Overlord is fun, but only as a rental.
Features
  • Overlord's key innovation is the introduction of an array of impish creatures, the Minions. They believe you are the old Overlord reborn and will use their unique skills to fetch, fight and die for you.

  • Throughout the game players will actively control a horde of these gremlin-like critters and they'll follow your every instruction no matter how despotic or, for the Minions, life threatening it is.
