Need for Speed Carbon Description

Need for Speed: Carbon takes you by the scruff of the neck and throws you straight into the world's most dangerous and ferocious form of street racing. With over 50 real-world licensed cars, including the Mazda RX-8, BMW M3 GTR Street, Dodge Viper SRT10 and Lamborghini Murcielago, there should enough to keep even the most jaded petrolhead happy. The game is the first in the series where you can build a crew and race in all-out urban warfare for your city against rival crews and opposing car classes. There are three different car classes to choose from - Tuner, American Muscle and Exotic. Need For Speed: Carbon uses an all-new physics model that makes each car handle and drive differently. You must risk life and limb in order to take over rival turfs, one street at a time. As the game progresses, the police will turn up the heat, forcing races to Carbon Canyon, which is on the outskirts of the city. Each member of your crew has unique skills that you can trigger by simply pressing a button. A Scout will lead you to shortcuts on the track and a Blocker will - you guessed it - block, which will hopefully slow down other racers. You can let your creative juices flow when designing your crew's cars with the new Autoscuplt car customisation tool that lets you design and morph your car in every way imaginable. It is also possible to tune every car to your heart's desire, which will no doubt lead to absolute mayhem on the roads. So, what are you waiting for? The race has just begun?

This is a difficult one to call. Taken by itself this is a great game with everything the street-racing Need For Speed games have built up. There is a good range of cars and a nice variety with 3 classes (Exotic, Tuner and Muscle). The addition of auto-sculp allows you to fine tune your body kit and alloys which gives even more scope for customisation. The racing is fun, fast and controls well and they have introduced a speed breaker which allows you to slow time down for finer control which always looks and feel cool! New to the franchise is a wing-man element. This is someone who will race with you and help you win utilising one of 3 tactics, blockers smash you rivals off the road, scouts will find every shortcut and highlight it on your map, and drafters will drive ahead of you allowing you to use their slipstream to build up speed. These work well and add a new element to the game. The sound is great with reasonable effects and the usual well-chosen licensed music. The graphics are pretty good but here is where I find it hard to recommend this PS3 title. The cars and the backgrounds look amazing in high definition but when you compare them to the PS2 version, its really only the background detail that is much improved here and you just don't notice it when racing anyway. In all other ways the two versions are identical so you have to ask; Is this version worth paying the extra for? In my opinion, no, but why not rent them both from swapgame and find out for yourself :) To summarise, this is a good arcade racing game with lots of depth and replay value but possibly not worth paying for the 'next-gen' version.
Features

Survive the Canyon: Leave the streets to battle rival bosses in the canyons outside the urban centre. All-new Canyon Duel and Drift race modes are the ultimate test of skill and nerve, where one wrong turn could cost you more than the race.

The City Is Yours for the Taking: Race for control of the city block-by-block by taking down rival crews on their turf, then defeat their crew leaders in life-or-death races in Carbon Canyon.

Customize Your Dream Car: The revolutionary new Autosculpt car customization tool Gives you the power to design and morph your car in every way imaginable.

Represent a Class: Affiliate with the Tuner, American Muscle, or Exotic car classes and prove once and for all who makes the best set of wheels. A new physics model makes each car handle and drive differently.

Build Your Crew: Strategically choose your crew members and use their skills on the road and in your garage to help you win races and customize your cars. Designate any member of your crew as a wingman and trigger his special skill to knock out your rivals.

Over 50 Real-World Licensed Cars: Every car is tuneable so you can customize their look and performance to suit your crew.
