Over the Hedge Description

Based on the Dreamworks animated film of the same name, Over the Hedge for the Nintendo DS takes players on an all-new adventure set after the antics of the movie. Playersy assume the roles of RJ, Verne, Hammy and Stella, who turn a suburban neighbourhood into their own personal playground full of traps and dangerous obstacles. The first few missions establish the story set in the movie, after which players choose to take the role of one of the main characters in a quest to save their woodland home from being destroyed by a housing development project. Using the unique personalities and skills of RJ, Verne and Hammy, players must conquer a neighborhood filled with foes such as Nugent the dog, Vincent the bear, the Taxidermist and Gladys Sharp, the animal-hating president of the homeowner's association. With 20 different missions for players to conquer, players can use the Nintendo DS microphone to distract and surprise enemies. The detailed graphics are presented on both screens, with a view from behind the character on teh top scrnee, and a bird's eye view on the bottom screen. Two players action is available in the form of wireless mini-game with a single Over the Hedge DS cartridge.

All in all this game is quite a polished affair and it offers up a decent 3D adventure. It gives the player just about the right balance between simple gameplay and engaging challenges. Its only real fault is the way in which it offers up its challenges. Each level has a certain objective that the player must complete and there is generally only one way to achieve the goal. This leads to an initial failure at the first attempt and then the frustration of having to play from the start to reset the mission. This is not unusual in any adventure or platform game, but it does sometimes make this game more frustrating than it needs to be. Worth a prolonged rental !

Special moves include: RJ's "golf ball barrage," Verne's "spinning shell attack," Hammy's "Hammy time" which allows him to streak around and overcome opponents in the blink of an eye, and Stella's "stink." Players move on to gain new abilities that allow each animal to perform advanced combo attacks as well as pick up hidden tools and armor.

  • With An Exciting Multiplayer Mode, Players Work Together To Survive The Suburban Neighborhood - When playing with a friend gamers go on multiplayer co-op quests to fill their wagon with food.
