Toca Race Driver 2 Description

Accompanying Codemasters' Colin McRae Rally onto PSP is their other popular motorsport title, TOCA Race Driver 2. Recently it would be fair to say that the Warwickshire games house have shifted their emphasis more onto this game than its Rally-focused sibling. The TOCA games have a fond following, and ever since last year's TRD2 have broadened their outlook to include other types of racing. Indeed, the game even gave itself the sobriquet 'The Ultimate Racing Simulator', which some would suggest was a very thinly veiled challenge to Gran Turismo's somewhat self-appointed place on its branch right at the top of the driving game tree. The PSP version is no different, and features 15 different motorsports in all, including GT Sports Car Racing, Street Racing, Rally, DTM, V8 Supercars, Global GT Lights, Rally Cross, Formula Ford, Open Wheel Grand Prix, Classic Car Racing, Super Truck Racing, Stockcar Oval Racing, Ice-Racing, Convertible Racing, and Performance Cars. While next month sees the release of TOCA 3 on the PC, it's no small achievement that the conversion-meisters at Sumo Digital have squeezed TOCA 2 into the PSP's diminutive but desirable frame. This version is certainly no slouch, with 30 different championships to enter and a decent 52 circuits to master. It also puts the capable PSP console through its paces. Races feature up to 21 cars racing on track at once, and the PSP's wireless function is made full use of - with the provision for up to 8 lucky PSP owners to race ad hoc. Certainly the most ambitious of the various racing car launch titles on PSP, TOCA Race Driver 2 is probably the pick of the bunch, too.

Toca Race Driver 2 is a GREAT racing sim, the damage models are AMAZING for the PSP (i new it was a great machine, but this is just unbelivable). Better than Gran Turismo PSP? Only time will tell!

WOW!! After renting Ridge Racer, I fancied a more realistic racing game, so this game was next on the list. I wanted realistic- I got it! When there is sand either side of the track it is so nerve-racking as one tyre off the track and you go spinning. There are loads of different types of races (my favourite being rally-cross), and loads of tracks too. I don't know how the rally part compares to the dedicated rally games as I haven't rented those yet, but it plays very well. Other than certain track side detail, the graphics are just as realistic as the control, including the damage on the cars- bumbers fall off, doors hang off, windows shatter! The sound is superb too, with great quality bumps and engine noises. The game itself is very good and full of variety. Most of the time you get a choice as to which style of championship you want to race in next, normally out of a choice of two. The best thing to do is once you see your choice, have a little time trial with both and see which one is easiest to race with before you choose. Which leads to the one complaint I have about this fantastic game- it is rock hard! Seriously, if you are a novice to games or racing games in particular, you may want to give this a miss. So far, I am doing quite well, but have barely managed to meet my target in the races so far, and have had to restart many a race due to crashing or spinning out. The good thing is there is a short 30 load for each race, and thats it- if you want to restart it at any time, you can- instantly, without any loading. A special mention must go to the fmv sequences between the races, where you meet your mechanic and your sponsors. The characters are well defined and animated, and the acting and script are top notch. This is where they tell you what challenge is ahead, and luckily it doesn't always mean you having to come first in the race. Overall then, superb- great realistic challenging gameplay, great graphics on the whole (bar some poorly textured buildings and trees), superb sound, and plenty of variety and lasting appeal. If you love racing, you'll love this. One this Swapgame, where's the instructions?! For anyone renting this, x-accelerate []-brake O-handbrake select-change view.
