The immensely popular multiplayer FPS finally gets an outing on console with this Xbox release of Counter-Strike. Thanks to Microsoft's well supported Xbox Live, the game is packed with online features, as well as containing a comprehensive single-player mode and support for the machine's relatively under-used System Link.
As has always been the case with Counter-Strike, the main emphasis of the game is the team-based multiplayer aspect, with up to 16 players able to take part in the anti-terrorist action, either locally or online, complete with the ever-so-handy Communicator headset At the heart of it is a player ranking system that allows you to take part in games with equal-calibre opponents and we are promised that the virtual playing fields will be completely cheat-free, ensuring that you'll be able to enjoy a thoroughly good blast, however competent you are.
Obviously, if you're not too fussed about the online gaming then you can always take advantage of a comprehensive single-player mode. Set in a realistic world of counter terrorism, the game sees you lead an elite team through a wide variety of international missions, ranging from the jungles of Asia, through Eastern Europe to Colombia.
As you'd probably expect, the game benefits from a few Xbox exclusives and enhancements. Most notably is a severe graphical overhaul that presents the most visually impressive version of the series to date. The game also treats you to new, graphically enhanced missions from the PC title Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. And, last but not least, we are also promised that new content will be available for download via Xbox Live in the not too distant future.
