FIFA 10 (PS3) Description

Electronic Arts' FIFA Soccer franchise was – for a while – in second place in the soccer game market. FIFA 2009 put an end to that, and the 2010 version looks very much as if it's going to maintain the high standards. Key additions to the latest version are much improved goal-keeper AI and reactions. No longer does your keeper simply lie forlornly on the deck if a chip goes over him, now he will attempt to get back to the goal line and tip the ball away. The additional AI also means that the keeper will look to narrow angles and generally cause the strikers more mental stress than has been available in the past. And he'll need to. Outfield players are now armed with a new 'Urgency' system to complement the 360-degree dribbling that how adorns the game. These are all helped out by the ability to actually muscle other players (legally but firmly) off the ball. 360-degree dribbling? Yes, no longer do you have to track around in huge circles in order to go in a straight line. There is far more – and far tighter - control than ever before. The fluidity of this means that the game flows more as you have to remember fewer button presses. Pre-game training has also been improved with the addition of a new set-piece creator that enables you to plan several multi-player moves that can be quickly incorporated in a real-game situation; strategy and real footballing knowledge will be at a premium to get the most out of the game. Another addition to training is the ability to train with your real-life mates (up to four of them at a time) locally as you prepare to take you team into the global game of multi-player, ranked FIFA 2010. Online FIFA is thrilling, testing and could see you recruited into international teams. Oh, you'll also get to map your very own face onto a virtual player to really rule the world.

Before playing fifa 10 I wondered what EA could actually do to improve upon FIFA 09. I thought for a while and couldn't think of any new features they could add. Wrongly concluded that it was the year that fifa would be a simple squad update and maybe a few tweaks on the graphics. Its anything but smile Everything except maybe the graphics have changed quite drastically. The new 360 degree dribbling allows you to turn in any direction instead of the old 8 peripherals that limited other football games. This is especially usefull when dribbling down the line, allowing you to run down it without running off the pitch and lets you weave between players like never possible on previous games. The new shoulder barging feature means strong players are vital in your team as its a major influence on the game. No longer can you sprint aimlessly down the line with the likes of Ronaldo and Messi, they'll end up getting pushed off the ball and you will lose possession. Instead quick "one, twos" and skillfull passing need to be mastered, making it ever more like a real match. The crossing and long ball has also changed. The ball is now curled a lot more and is more accurate than FIFA 09 making it another key element of the game to master. Shooting has also become more realistic, needing to be controlled more and not always heading straight for the corner with the push of an (RB) button. instead you have to move you players body position and align him more so with the goal to get that perfect shot to beat the keeper Passing is pretty much the same, slightly improved and more reactive and consistent in power. Players and the referee alike will try their best to avoid the annoying situation of blocking your pass. Manager mode is again practically the same, quite a lot of the achievements based on it, a new newspaper sponsored by sky sports is the only thing to really get "excited about" here laugh. Although AI are more difficult to play against, but this can sometimes be a major downfall for me personally being at a standard level against AI, I find world class too hard and professional to easy, both of them making it become boring, either because your always winning or always losing. For anyone who hasn't purchased this yet and are looking at videos of FIFA 10 you may wonder whats different about it. You need to play the game, and you'll see what I mean. Initially the new control seems a disimprovement but once you get the hang of it and learn how to play better you will see it as a major improvement. Personally I found the demo lacking, but the demo is slightly different to the actual game and a few tweaks and improvements have been made

Being a real-life football fan, I am something of a purist when it comes to football games and believe that they should prioritise really capturing the spirit of the sport (minus the bad sportsmanship, diving, refereeing blunders, players abusing referees over their blunders etc.). This is why I converted from the Pro Evo to FIFA series since last year, as I saw that while the Pro Evo developers settled for an ageing formula, the guys at EA have really made an effort to make FIFA a true reflection of the sport. FIFA 10 is the best football game ever. It builds on FIFA 09 in small ways, but ways which really enhance the game. The 360 degree player movement is a small touch that makes the game seem infinitely more realistic, and the virtual pro mode has also improved. While licensing has never been a priority for me, it is certainly a bonus that the best football game out there is also the one with all the licenses. There isn't a ton of difference between this FIFA and the previous one, and the player models still look a bit freaky (Pro Evo wins on this front), but in terms of gameplay it improved where there wasn't even that much room for improvement. Will keep you and your mates busy until FIFA 11

Allthough an improvement on Fifa 09 it still lacks in some areas. The graphics are slighty better and 360degree dribling is an OK improvement. The commentating is still solid with major improvements in the manager-mode side of things which has also improved greatly.
