Batman: Arkham Asylum (Xbox 360) Description

Never mind the hype, Batman: Arkham Asylum is actually the must-have game of the year for superhero fans. Featuring a tasty blend of two fisted action, stealth and, of course gadgets, this is sure to tickle your inner nerd. Batman's taken The Joker to Arkham (again) but (shock!) The Joker's got loose. He's also set a bunch of other assorted sociopaths from the Dark Knight's rogues gallery loose. It turns out, however, that the aim isn't just general chaos, oh no. The Joker, for all his crazy tendencies, has a plan. The Joker didn't get to be the arch-nemesis of one of the world's finest superheroes by just being a bit whacko... Gameplay starts with Rocksteady's 'FreeFlow' combat. The way this works is that combat basically just consists of attacks and blocks. That might sound tedious, but actually it's thoroughly rewarding. Rather than stringing together overly complex moves, it's about getting the rhythm right – being sure to counter enemy blows then moving smoothly into an attack, stringing together as many moves as possible to maximise your XP. Stopping this from being a straightforward brawler, however, is a hefty stealth component. Batman's many things, but not one of those things is bulletproof. This makes sneaking around and taking out enemies one by one a necessity where guns are involved. Your first step in doing this is switching into Detective Mode, highlighting handy features of your environment such as baddies, things like air vents and high-up gargoyles you can use to get around and weak structural points you can blow up. You'll be dropping down for inverted attacks, swooping in for glide kicks and generally being a sneaky badass in no time. Also altering the playing field is the ability to use XP you've generated to lay your hands on upgrades. These include improved performance of gadgets, better armour and new moves. Throw in a spot of environment-based puzzling and you've got a very well rounded game. There are some features in the game aimed at providing a bit of replayability and providing added depth to the game. Character bios pop up, as do interview tapes that provide background information on the different villains. Similarly, you can collect Riddler trophies scattered about the game to unlock challenges set apart from the main game. These consist of the likes of rooms full of baddies to take out sneakily, and waves of goons to beat down with just your fists. All in all, Arkham Asylum offers a compelling package sure to make any Batman fan and/or lover of action games giggle for weeks.

Batman Arkham Asylum Review Through the years we have attempted at placing ourselves in Batman’s boots and his hectic world and schedule, but most games have made you feel like you were playing a Super Nintendo version. In general without all the fancy slang, they were rubbish. Batman Begins the game simply was just a man in a cape, sneaking around at night climbing lots and lots of pipes and interrogating people. If it was given a more mature rating, it could easily have passed a increasingly cheaper and duller Hitman game. Does anyone feel like you would just want a good selection of Batman’s gadgets without having to go into you garage and make an awful attempt and creating them yourself? Would anyone like to gain Batman’s X Ray vision without peering through a telescope into the neighbours window and pretending that you were using X Ray vision? Also gaining lots of attention from the police. Would anyone just simply like to play a Batman game which was actually good, or at least worth trying? Well, Batman Arkham Asylum has just entered your life through rather eerie ways. Taking on the role of Batman has never been so satisfying. Climbing onto gargoyles. Using X Ray Vision, seeing an enemy which is unable to see you and attacking like a bird of prey, completely catching the goon off guard. It just left a grin on my face which didn’t fade till I had switched the game off, which was as hard as instantly trying to take an heroin addict away from his start of the day hit. (No Heroin Addicts, Homeless or goons were harmed in the making of this review, even though one or two goons did end up beaten to a pulp through the fist of JUSTICE). Talking about drugs, there are instances where you will feel like you have just taken some bad skunk. Think about, what do you think Batman does with drugs he confiscates, eh, eh. Where do you think he gets his creativity and imagination from to make almost all of his gadgets. Whether or not Batman is a junkie or not, he still kicks ass and saves his city every time it needs saving. Batman is a fully functioning crack head. Gotham is his baby, AND AINT NO ONE TOUCHIN BATMANS BABY!!! Smashing skulls, twisting arms and lobbing thugs into walls has never been so satisfying. Many moments in it you will feel like the story is going in a certain path which could and might instantly change at any given moment. Kind of like the show LOST, but the difference is that the story in Batman is actually interesting. Get ready to begin the longest night of Batman’s life as he is about to be traumatised, trip balls and be touched in many ways. Much like what you would get if you spent the night at Michael Jackson house. Tactics are brought into the game very impressively with a unique type of game play. Combat is a glorious achievement which feels even better when playing as the Caped Crusader. As Batman begins his story you begin to see very well known characters from the comic book series. Such as Joker, Bane, Ivy, and Scarecrow. Bringing back the old style of the Joker and losing the Dark Knight remake of him seemed a much better choice seeing as how this isn’t a movie game no matter how dark the game may seem. At no point will you play this and think, “ I just can’t be bothered fighting anymore of those crazy lunatics”, in fact you may even in your own way try and spur them on. In the same way you may try and spur on that obese kid in your class just to eat just one more toblerone. The visuals are stunning, from the characters and handful of different locations to the background scenery. Literally placing you in Batman’s world which we have all wanted at some point in our lives. Combat uses a technique of reversals and heavy and light attacks along with moves which stun enemies long enough to get in a good old bat claw to the face. Ouch! Game play run smoothly at most parts usually when running and fighting, but actual walking and turning seems like Batman may have one leg shorter than the other. In total this game deserves the well earned credit which it will receive. 9/10

All in all this is perhaps one of the best Comic to games adaption’s I have seen. But there is a few issues I have but it is nothing massive to be honest. My main problem lay’s in the dialog “I eat punks like that for breakfast”, I am pretty sure I have never heard Batman say that. But the overall story is awesome “Until the end”. The last battle was a little disappointing it was the easiest battle in the whole game, Also the Riddler’s challenges are easy to find if you keep on your detective! But over all this game was fantastic, I pointed out the faults that I found, now let’s move onto positives! There were so many small nods in the game it was unreal, from Ra’s body in the morgue to Clay Face changing shape in his cell, then of course calendars man’s cell and so much more. The interview taps where a real nice extra in the game it adds a real touch of who these people are. The Abraham Arkham codes (those beetle statues investigate them) gave a great history to the place and did you solve the biggest mystery? Poison Ivy was great, Scarecrow was awesome and I loved Croc. I hated that you never really got to fight with Harley! Now the main villain Joker from the very start walking down the hall with him I loved his dialog and actions they really caught the Joker (until the end) . Best part in the game for me was the gadgets and fighting system, it was really easy to pick up and master but as the game went on you had to become better and faster and combine the gadgets in with the moves along with remembering to counter an incoming attack while battranging that giant monster running towards you. Overall I will gave this game a solid four and a half it merely loses half a point because of the end battle, the less said about that the better. All in all a great game to own and the fact that the extra maps are free to download makes this game a must have for any Xboxer.

Absolutely fantastic gameplay, well worth a rent with a plot that drives you to keep playing it until you've examined every inch of the island and defeated the riddler. A beautifully fluid combat system sees batman flow from henchman to henchman, the counter system proving just challenging enough later in the game to keep the game from becoming simple. Only slight criticism I have is that many of the boss fights are repetitive not nearly challenging enough. I waited with absolute childish anticipation for the battle with killer croc, and was disappointed the ease with which I defeated him. Having said this, the flawless graphics and cinematics are impressive enough to keep satisfaction levels high. An addictive game that kept me from sending it back until a week after I had completed the main storyline , only due to a totally comprehensible desire to outsmart the riddler and send him back to his cell. 5/5

Although I was never that into superheroes, I've always liked Batman. Something about the dark world, the truly sinister villains and the fact that Batman himself is pretty twisted appealed to me; this game captures all these things better than any film has (including The Dark Knight). This game's loyalty to the DC version of Batman could've gone either way, but some great scripting and character design makes this a winner. As Batman, you gain access to all his best gadgets as you progress through the game and can choose your upgrades as you level up. The combat is like a more developed version of Assassin's Creed, relying mainly on free-flowing combo's and counter-punching and is extremely satisfying. Stealth is also important, as you'll die quickly if you try to run headlong into a bunch of armed goons. Instead you have to make use of ledges, stone gargoyles etc to silently swoop down on armed enemies. I was also surprised at the freedom the game offers; instead of the game forcing you to go places, you can wander around Arkham Island, solving Riddler's riddles (unlocking character info, trophies etc.) or just beating up groups of goons. The graphics are extremely good; the characters look gritty and detailed and if you stand on Arkham's highest tower you can see virtually the whole island. I'm sure it helps that Batman is the only superhero I've ever really liked and that this is the most faithful rendition ever of the darker Frank Miller-style comics in any film or game, but the overall excellence of this game means that it should be played by any stealth/action game fan.

This has got to be the finest example in video game history of a superhero game done right. Arkham Asylum is absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Everything from the voice casting to the dark and broody detailed environments, makes you immediately feel sucked in. Not only do they do a great job of making you feel like you are Batman, but they also do the even more convincing job of making you feel like you are Batman trapped in what is pretty much hell on earth, so although you're the obviously strong and courageous Batman, you are also noticably concerned and bothered by the environment. It's a great balancing act that I can only really describe as the first real example of a well written interactive comic. The story is excellent. Mark Hamill as the Joker is quite possibly even better than the recent mighty performance from Heath Ledger - a completely different Joker from that film, but faithful to a lot of the nuances you'll see from him in the comics. With that careful balance of maniacal, twisted and well planned, you'll know that Joker is a formidable enemy by the time you've completed this game. There is plenty within the game itself to actually make it fun too. Perhaps unsurprisingly, a lot of this is tied into Batman and his abilities, so you'll be zipping from place to place on a zipline, hanging crooks up with lines silently, taking them out with Baterangs - you get the picture. None of this ever gets boring as the environments and your abilities grow over time, allowing you access to previously unreachable areas, and giving you good reason to backtrack and explore this extraordinary place. There are lots of hidden items for those completists amongst you, and finding them all, as well as solving all of riddlers mysteries, should keep you busy for a long time. I reckon 25 hours or so is a good estimate for play time if you try to find everything. The combat system is an absolute beauty in this game. It's handled so well, with simple button presses and clear visual and audio cues that allow you to dodge and parry your opponent's attacks with absolute ease. It feels like it should be that way - you are Batman after all, and you should be able to kick the hell out of your enemies, but it never feels like you're too overpowered. There will be moments when you have many enemies on you at once, and if you're not careful, you can get overwhelmed. Overall though, you'll be breaking heads with absolute style. The animation in these sequences is particularly impressive and looks like a very well put together fight scene in a movie.... if you're good enough with the controls, you'll be taking out multiple foes at once without one of them making contact with a single punch or kick - each expertly dodged just in time. The PS3 version has the extra Joker playable character, so I went with this version, but the main game is so good, that you'll be delighted with whichever version you have. This is simply a must-buy - and not just for comic book fans. Any gamer who appreciates a good 3rd person adventure game will get real enjoyment out of this.
