Timesplitters 2 (PS2) Description

Released alongside the European launch of the PS2, the original TimeSplitters suffered mixed reviews. Created by ex-Goldeneye team members, the game was lumbered with an expectancy so big, its lack of a greatly-involving single player game ultimately meant a fair amount of disappointment. In its favour, TimeSplitters was also recognised for being an extremely entertaining, quickfire multiplayer game, featuring a solid game mechanic and intuitive control system. Claiming to have ironed out its predecessor's flaws, as well as also improving significantly on its commendable aspects, it therefore comes as no surprise to hear that the game's sequel should be greatly anticipated. As the story goes, the power of the TimeSplitters has grown and the fate of mankind is in the balance. Space marines called in to fight against these evil creatures are being outnumbered and outfought as they battle through the futuristic space station that the TimeSplitters have set up as their base. The space marines finally stumble across a TimePortal powered by nine rare crystal shards, which enables the TimeSplitters to travel through time and affect the course of history. The only way to stop the TimeSplitters' evil reign continuing is to follow them into the TimePortal and recover the nine crystals before they are lost forever. The marines take a leap into the unknown, without any idea as to which time period they will end up in and without any idea as to what the future - or past - will hold. Placing greater emphasis on the single player experience, TimeSplitters 2 offers an involving story mode, which features a complex narrative with multiple objective-based episodes. Nine time travelling episodes can be found throughout, set across a diverse array of locations, ranging from the Wild West through to Neo Tokyo. The game engine has been extensively upgraded to accommodate more expansive backgrounds and a host of graphical effects, while still providing the distinctive smooth fast paced action of the original. On top of this, a completely rewritten animation system incorporating inverse cinematics brings convincing movement and dynamism to a new collection of characters. Building further on the original's extensive multiplayer options, TimeSplitters 2 allows up to four PS2's to be connected up, via the system's iLink cable, thus enabling a total of 16 players to battle it out across the various game modes. That's some serious multiplayer action if you can afford all the machines, multitaps and TV's required for such a pleasure. If you can't, there's still the traditional 4-way, split screen mode in there, as well as plenty of moneys-worth of one-player game.

PERFECT? - This game is one of the most perfect games I have ever played. There is in my mind no better game to play split-screen with friends and no more challenging or enjoyable arcade style shooter. The assortment of weapons is amazing ranging from stock machine guns and shotguns to plasma rifles and a brick. The assortment of characters is equally eclectic with the option to play as zombies, a dinosaur, a robotic fish, a giant white hand or a selection of robots, marines, cowboys and 50s style gangsters. These characters are all rewards for completing the huge wealth of challenges on offer in the game. Which range from completing the story missions on various difficulties to surviving wave upon wave of zombie hordes to smashing windows with bricks. The game is also very visually funny and will definitely make you laugh all the way through. It is as charming and well realised as a pixar or aardman film. Easily my favourite shooter of the generation as it didn't take it self seriously at all and still managed to be practically perfect gameplay wise. The controls are tight and responsive, the gameplay is so frenetic it borders on the hallucinogenic. It was developed by the same team as goldeneye and in many ways is its spiritual successor. In my view this game has yet to be bested at what it does and is as enjoyable today as it was when it came out.

Timesplitters 2 is an incredible improvement on its predecessor in every way. While the first was completely devoid of any story, and every mission basically involved picking something up and taking it back to the start of the level, TimeSplitters 2 actually gives you objectives – both primary and secondary – and a story that's remotely worth following. You can play through the whole thing co-operatively and the missions are fun and varied. The challenge mode also makes a welcome return and is crazier than ever, offering you trophies and character unlocks in a variety of ridiculous challenges such as bricking windows or fending off waves of zombies. As if that wasn't enough, the highlight of this game is definitely the multiplayer, which makes PS3 multiplayer games look grey and boring by comparison. There is a ridiculous wealth of game modes and the customisability of matches is endless – from customising weapon/bot sets to the nitty-gritty of scores, radars, one-shot kills etc. There are some amazing levels too, with the Ice Station being one of the best multiplayer levels ever (why they omitted it from TS: Future Perfect is beyond me). TS 2 was the most progressive game in this legendary game series and is the one that really gave TS it's cult following. It is the proper spiritual successor to Goldeneye for the N64 (made by the same company) and it's humorous take on just about everything makes it one of the most refreshing and likeable games I've ever played.

The perfect multiplayer game for a party. Oozing with humour and style, this game runs so smoothly and controls so precisely that is a fine example of a console FPS that is both accomplished, graphically entertaining, challenging and immense fun to play. There is a wide variety of characters to choose from, the environments are great fun and the guns, though some are slightly unoriginal, are enjoyable to use. There is a single-player campaign however it is in multiplayer where this game really shines.
