Brutal Legend (PS3)

Brutal Legend (PS3) review

Graphics: The world is imaginatively designed and looks fantastic. We have the 'screaming wall' which is a wall of amps that constantly produce feedback, we have enemies in the form of goths and glam rockers and we have spiders that spin bass strings instead of guitar strings. Genius. Story: Its a decent yarn at the end of the day, if a bit cliche at times. There are some great laughs to be had, but they do peter out at the end. It keeps the game moving forward, thats it. Gameplay: This has divided alot of people. The hack and slash bits are basic, but heaps of fun. There are also some RTS elements where you command an army comprised of 'headbangers' (melee units), 'roadies' (stealth units), 'thunder hoggs' (units that play soothing bass to heal your troops) and many other units, and of course you can always jump in and fight yourself with a multitude of axe attacks and guitar solos to use to smite your enemies. Sure, these RTS bits can be a bit wonky, but any game that allows you to summon a flaming zeppelin to crash on your enemies by playing a guitar solo has to be considered as genius. Sound: The best licensed soundtrack ever. No contest. The metal on offer here is awesome (although there is a distinct lack of iron maiden) and the songs nearly always fit the story (Driving at high speed through a burning castle whilst hearing 'Through the Fire and Flames' and battling the final boss to the tune of Judas Priest's 'painkiller' were particular highlights. Voice acting is also top notch, particularly Jack Black as Eddie Riggs. Lifespan: If you love collecting every little tidbit in games then it'll last you ages, but if you're like me and like to just play the story with occasional side missions, then It'll last you 8 hours at best, which isn't great. There is multiplayer but its just human vs human 'stage battles' (which are the RTS bits), so if you like them, great, but if you don't, then its a bit limited. Overall: Its a great game, but not without its flaws.

Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3)

Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3) review

Coming from a non-batman fan who's knowledge of their 'universe' is that Batman and Joker don't get on very much, this game is awesome. Honestly, its brilliant. The graphics are top notch, the combat is the very definition of 'easy to play hard to master' and the voice acting is incredible (mark hamill as the Joker is genius, easily the best villain I've played against). The only minor gripes I have with this game is that its a tad short (if you just go through the story) and the boss battles are a bit 'learn the routine, do it 3 times and win'. The only exception to this rule are the boss battles with scarecrow, which are genius (look out for some fourth-wall breaking!). Overall an incredible game, and if you're a batman fan I'm sure you'll get even more out of it than I did!

The Orange Box (PS3)

The Orange Box (PS3) review

Half Life 2 and its sequels are legendary FPS games, but to me they seem a little 'old school' now, maybe my demands are just too high. The set piece design is great, and the physics system was innovative at the time, I just didn't 'love' it as much as Call of Duty 4 or Killzone 2. Graphics are decent, but there is some slowdown when things get hectic on the PS3 version. The orange box also comes with Team Fortress 2, basically and online shooter with 9 classes to use from chaingun wielding 'heavies' to longer range snipers, everyone can find a class they like, its just a shame the player count isnt very high (on PS3 that is I don't know about the 360). But for me the best game in this package is portal. I can't begin to explain the concept but for me its one of the best game's I've ever played, I can't find anything wrong with it, and it really does work your brain at times. You owe it to yourself to experience this game. Overall its a fantastic value for money package, expecially if you love half life more than I do.

Turok (PS3)

Turok (PS3) review

I'lll keep this short and sweet. The dinosaur fighting is fun, and although the gane uses raptor variations a little too often, spectacular knife kills never get old. HOWEVER, far too often you are asked to fight generic 'soldiers' which have no personality and repeat the same few lines over and over again. For too long in this game you fight down grey corridors against generic enemies when you should be fighting what makes this game different in the first place, dinosaurs. Graphics are sub-par, the control system is a bit weird, oh and the difficulty will surprise people coming from the likes of COD4 and Resistance. Its pretty unforgiving. Overall a below average shooter that spectacularly fails to realise what its main selling point is. Oh, and the story is TERRIBLE. Big burly space marines shot down over a planet with 'genetic modification' causing dinosaurs to appear. Yawn.
