inFamous (PS3)

inFamous (PS3) review

This is without doubt one of the best games of 2009 so far. Even though the open world is very GTA and the powers are Star Wars Force Unleashed, this game glues it all together to make a game more fun than both of those....and I loved GTA! The graphics are good (not awesome), but that is not important for this game. It is simple good fun to play. Leaping from the highest building you can find never gets old (although it did make me feel dizzy)! The story is very well told and lasts for a reasonable length of time, plus you have the added bonus to play through once as Good and once as Evil which includes different missions and powers. It's just a fun polished game from start to finish and well worth a rent if you can't purchase.

Street Fighter IV (PS3)

Street Fighter IV (PS3) review

Wow this was over rated by nearly everyone. I've been around long enough to have played all iterations of this game and this one is no different from the others. Yes, yes the graphics are updated but that never really mattered on with SF games, plus 2.5D graphics look and feel a bit lame these days..even MKvDC looked better (and played better with a better story)...and what's with the giant Hulk feet for everyone? The important thing for SF games was always the game play and this one seems to have something off about it. Maybe it's down to the special powered up moves being almost unstoppable or that you can still take a good beating from a button masher or maybe the real issue is that this hasn't improved, changed or done anything different for well over a decade. Also unless you want to splash out on a £80+ joystick the PS3 pad is close to unusable especially online against those that have the joystick, you just get boringly and continually panelled into the floor. I can honestly say I more enjoy Drake's (Fortune) panicky fist swinging fights than all of SF4's move list. Oh and the stories, as always with SF games, are bloody awful. Fighting games need to start looking for a new way forward, they are getting very dull very fast.

Dead Space (PS3)

Dead Space (PS3) review

Absolutely must play this. Up there with Uncharted & Call of Duty 4 as must play PS3 games. The graphics are superb, the sound is spot on with the creepy ambience and the gameplay is solid. Some of the scenes have to been seen; looking at the planet and surrounding area from outside the ship or seeing the asteroids bombard the hull from the flight deck look unbelievably good. The best part is that this game is scary! Try not to jump in the 1st action sequence when you are trying to outrun a mutant and you have no weapons or try not to panic as your faced with a creature blocking your way whilst your air runs to 20 seconds left.....awesome.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PS3)

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PS3) review

Pap, pap, pap, pap...etc. Not very good at all, especially when compared to FIFA 09. And before you start I'm a PES fan and this year is the 1st I have thought FIFA is actually better and traded in my Pro Evo. Shame on you Konami, try harder next year....and don't use Lawrenson, he sounds either bored or like he's trying to entice you into his car for some sweeties! Boooo!

The Godfather: The Don's Edition (PS3)

The Godfather: The Don's Edition (PS3) review

This is a decent game idea poorly done. The load times are often and slow, which is annoying to start off with, and you can't always skip the cut scenes (which after 10 goes is annoying). The graphics are a touch better than PS2 version of the game but that's all. The motion sensor bits are just tacked on nonsense and best ignored. All of this would be acceptable if it wasn't for the fact that it gets boring after an hour or so. The missions are very repetitive and linear, not at all GTA like (which it tries to copy). The two things it does have going for it is the voice acting (very well done) and the story line....which I guess you would expect considering the source material it has to work with. Bottom line: remove it from your rental queue now unless you are a massive Godfather fan that likes ploddingly slow repetitive games.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent (PS3)

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent (PS3) review

It's an OK game, nothing special and definitely not Next Gen. Graphics are a touch better than PS2, the loading is slow and the whole game feels plodding. Also it's quite easy to complete. If you like previous Splinter Cell games (which I do) it is well worth a go as it's just more of the same. Don't expect to be blown away with any part of it though....that should happen when the next Splinter Cell arrives. Bottom line : Rental only!

Assassin's Creed (PS3)

Assassin's Creed (PS3) review

Fantastic game. The graphics are amazing, the sheer number of people on the streets is the 1st thing that gets you...they're everywhere and seemingly look and act different for the most. The size of the game is more than big enough, although when (if) I finish it I will still bemoan that there's not more....that's a good thing though, you only ever want more of the top games and this is definitely one of those. The feeling you get when you silently knife someone in the neck and then just stroll away is great, as is the feeling of absolute panic when you're trying to out sprint 30+ guards across rooftops and alleys so you can hide in a bale of hay. Brilliant game and thoroughly recommend it. nb. 4 stars only because finding the hidden items & templars is seeming impossible, although I'm sure others will have done it, I'm finding it tough.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma (PS3)

Ninja Gaiden Sigma (PS3) review

Many good points to this game: it looks great, the fighting controls are fluid and easy to use and the size of the game is massive. It does have some down points though: probably too damn hard for most people, a wee bit repetitive and you can get lost to a certain degree and do a hell of a lot of pointless running around...this is especially annoying when you have very little energy left and the enemies respawn! Not really my cup of tea but I can appreciate that it's a damn fine game for those that like this sort of action adventure game.

Stuntman: Ignition (PS3)

Stuntman: Ignition (PS3) review

I really like this game, it's just good fun to play. Graphics are decent, sound is OK and there are enough levels to keep most happy. It may be a bit too linear for most people but it makes up for it with insane stunts (that are really hard to pull off) and loads of good movie rip offs such as Batman, Bond & Dante's Peak. All good fun.

Colin McRae: DiRT (PS3)

Colin McRae: DiRT (PS3) review

Having played this and Sega Rally I would say this is the better game but for one player only (even online). The graphics are great, crash damage is superb, and the engine sounds are great. The game plays really well with a good sense of speed, although the different surfaces are not really that different. Added to this the game is no longer just rally racing but loads of different styles added together, great fun and adds a lot of variety. An absolute bucket load of levels should keep anyone busy for ages, especially if you go for the top difficulty level.
