Facebreaker (PS3)

Facebreaker (PS3) review

Bold and cartoony visuals and satisfying sound effects are the best part of this boxing arcade brawler. The controls are fairly simple but that makes for little in the way of mastery. The single player game is simply a matter of finding the particular technique you need for each fight and once you get it, you win. This doesn't allow for any real development of skill like you'd find in the likes of Tekken. The create a boxer feature is nice but the face recognition is woeful and takes aages! Seriously, my first boxer looked nothing like me but took over 30 minutes to generate! Multiplayer is really where this game is most fun and local multiplayer especially. Overall, this is one to rent and try but I can't recommend buying it

Sonic the Hedgehog (PS3)

Sonic the Hedgehog (PS3) review

This game is sucks monkey balls. Back in the day, Sonic was a name that guaranteed a fun, fast, exciting game that was challenging but in the right way. These days he has totally lost his way. Each game that arrives seems like a more and more desperate attempt to revive the franchise and each seems to fail more spectacularly than the last. This, sadly, is no exception. The graphics are bright and cartoony as you'd expect but the mix of Sonic-like animation and real-looking human characters just doesn't work and seems more like a crazy mod than a genuine game element. The camera is infuriating and on a game where you should be moving fast you often cannot see whats ahead or change direction quickly. The controls are frustrating and feel heavy and laboured, not what you expect from the blue lighting at all! The effect of bad controls is worsened by the fact that this game seems to demand pinpoint positioning at very high speeds often meaning you die in very unfair ways because you simply cannot tell what to do. Most high speed areas are simply a matter of trial and error and you will have to do them many times before you learn the route well enough to complete it. This is meant to be an adventure game but with the classic Sonic platforming format retained but for me, Sonic in 3D has never worked. The more platformy, high-speed sections in this game hold some appeal but the controls make it difficult to really enjoy. The RPG elements of walking around, talking to people and solving puzzles are annoying and slow and I mean that in both senses of the word. They drive the plot at a very lethargic pace and the game itself struggles to load and draw the areas despite the massive power of the PS3. Overall, this is one for hardened Sonic fans only and even they will probably find it a bitter dissapointment

Need For Speed: Carbon (PS3)

Need For Speed: Carbon (PS3) review

This is a difficult one to call. Taken by itself this is a great game with everything the street-racing Need For Speed games have built up. There is a good range of cars and a nice variety with 3 classes (Exotic, Tuner and Muscle). The addition of auto-sculp allows you to fine tune your body kit and alloys which gives even more scope for customisation. The racing is fun, fast and controls well and they have introduced a speed breaker which allows you to slow time down for finer control which always looks and feel cool! New to the franchise is a wing-man element. This is someone who will race with you and help you win utilising one of 3 tactics, blockers smash you rivals off the road, scouts will find every shortcut and highlight it on your map, and drafters will drive ahead of you allowing you to use their slipstream to build up speed. These work well and add a new element to the game. The sound is great with reasonable effects and the usual well-chosen licensed music. The graphics are pretty good but here is where I find it hard to recommend this PS3 title. The cars and the backgrounds look amazing in high definition but when you compare them to the PS2 version, its really only the background detail that is much improved here and you just don't notice it when racing anyway. In all other ways the two versions are identical so you have to ask; Is this version worth paying the extra for? In my opinion, no, but why not rent them both from swapgame and find out for yourself :) To summarise, this is a good arcade racing game with lots of depth and replay value but possibly not worth paying for the 'next-gen' version.
