Mirror's Edge (PS3)

Mirror's Edge (PS3) review

Whilst it may be an intriguing novelty at first to play what is essentially a platformer from a first person perspective it soon becomes abundently clear that this game would be nothing were it not for that one concept, which in itself doesn't add much to the experience. It also comes at the expense of the combat, which quickly shows itself to be primitive and thouroughly uninteresting. A real shame especially considering Dice were the same people behind the acclaimed Battlefield series. Worth a try if only to see why first person platforming does certainly NOT work.

skate.2 (PS3)

skate.2 (PS3) review

With the sequel comes an inevitable influx in the amount to tricks available to your skater and not a whole much else. Finger flips can now be achieved by grabbing the board as you flick the right analogue stick, and the addition of one-footed combos will make any fan of the original happy. But that's just the problem here, the minor changes will only appeal to the original's fans, and the big additions such as being able to get off your board aren't executed well enough to draw in any new players. If you didn't like Skate you won't like Skate.2, but if you never played the first game then there might be something here to appeal to you.

Far Cry 2 (PS3)

Far Cry 2 (PS3) review

Whilst initially hard to get into with its jamming weapons and in-game map system over a long period of time Far Cry 2 just makes sense. It's at the point where you discover the multitude of ways available to you to complete each mission that Far Cry 2's real beauty shows itself, and it's when you manage to take a sniper shot of your assasination target from across the desert that you realise this game is a different beast entirely from everything else out there.

Prince of Persia 4 (PS3)

Prince of Persia 4 (PS3) review

Yes it may be repetative, and yes it may be far easier than every one of its predecessors but this easy going, accessible nature is at the very core of the experience. This isn't a game you're going to sit down and burn through in an afternoon, but it's one that should be savoured over time, with it's flaws thinly spread so as to draw as little attention as possible to them. A god-awful combat system and occasionally inaccurate comtrols mar what would otherwise be a wholley peaceful and graphically exuberant experience, but Prince of Persia is worth playing solely for those moments when none of this matters, when you effortlessly chain together acrobatic moves to pass through the rich environments Ubisoft Montreal have crafted.

Fallout 3 (PS3)

Fallout 3 (PS3) review

It might just be because of the first person perspective but Fallout 3 never felt like it fit anywhere meaningfully for me. Too much manual aiming prevented it from being a straight rpg, but the stats governing your accuracy stopped any fps leanings, and the result is gameplay I found myself working against rather than with. There's alot to love in Fallout 3, with its huge open world and hundreds of side stories but if you can't get past the game's interface, then you're never going to enjoy it as much as you might have hoped.
