Mercenaries 2: World in Flames (PS3)

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames (PS3) review

Definately a good rental game this one - I thoroughly enjoyed the first few hours, but got a little bored in the end so I'm glad I rented and not bought. The semi-open world structure is nice, graphics are good, if not excellent, and I enjoyed the freedom to use various vehicles including tanks, as well as decent destructible buildings and scenary - air strikes are a cool way of taking out buildings for example and the physics seemed decent to me. The backstory is general video-game fayre, not particularly engrossing, but OK for what it is. I did notice a couple of annoying bugs, the occasional floating crate, a boat with a tendancy to drive across land, and some really bad AI where enemies just stand there looking at you - but not anything to spoil the enjoyment. Overall I'd say better than average, a good time to be hand blowing things up. I didn't try the online mode, and only played approx. 50% of the way through before I got bored. Would probebly warrant more attention if it hadn't been for Xmas presents!!

LittleBigPlanet (PS3)

LittleBigPlanet (PS3) review

I owe LBP and haven't rented it... so why the review... well I'd advise EVERYONE to rent it. This is such a divisive game - I love it, but I can see why some might hate it. So - Good things - I enjoy the level editor, even though it's VERY hard work to produce anything half-decent (I'm failing so far) and the actual game itself provides a few hours of really interesting platforming across a nice range of levels with some great fun moments (riding a dog in a B-movie horror wedding for example, or running along buffalo in place of moving platforms). There are some good levels available online and the multiplayer is very very slick, smooth and fun. Dressing your sackboy and outfitting him is also a laugh and is one of those rarities that might interest non-gamer partners. There are definately some downsides, downloadable content can be pricey (extra outfits and packs etc), and some of the games levels can be unforgiving thanks to the real physics involved. Also, to be honest, unless you want the level designed, or play online alot, then the single-player experience is quite limited. My advice would be to definately rent it.
