Mafia II Overview

If you're one of those people that like to give friends a lift in your car boot or try to haggle with Argos workers using an offer they can't refuse, then you will probably love playing Mafia II. The sequel to the award-winning Mafia, this game puts you in the dark and shady world of organised crime and family values of another nature entirely. You assume the role of Vito, a downtrodden Italian American who is escaping a life of poverty by joining the Mafia. He soon learns that this is the only viable way for him to change his life around, attain wealth and get respect from others. With his childhood friend Joe, Vito follows the downward spiral that is organised crime and try to prove to the big bosses that they are worth getting 'made.' Just like the game's predecessor, you work your way up the chain of command by taking on low-level jobs such as robbery and stealing cars. As the duo climb further up the ladder and deeper down the rabbit hole, they realise that life as a Mafia thug isn't all guns and roses. Although the main gameplay mechanics remain the same as the original Mafia, in Mafia II 2K Czech has revamped a lot of control and detail, such as vehicular exploration and hand-to-hand combat. You'll be taking part in car chases, gunfights and all manner of other engrossing activities that will ensure that your eyes will be just as widened as Vito's when the story reaches its climax.

left quote From the outset, I am just going to say now that this is a great game. First of all there's the environment, the progression from the end of one era into another early on in the game sets a great atmosphere, you will be driving around New York, listening to the radio feeling like the songs playing are not 50 or 60 years old but are brand new releases and that this Frank Sin-whats-his-face is a pretty good singer he might make it big. The game also looks fantastic, as I said the movement from one era to another is very noticeable, I wont say to much not to spoil things but at one point everything changes, cars look different, people dress differently and musical taste changes. Besides that the city looks great, people look great, cars look great etc. The story is one we have encountered before, the little guys rise to power in the criminal underworld, but the relationships built up through out the game really work and as another reviewer said can be quite touching. It also delivers a nice feeling of realism, in the sense that day turns into night, once you have done your days missions, you can free roam the city pop into the bar for a few drinks, go buy yourself some new clothes, rob a gun store, steal a few cars, go on a murderous rampage, what ever a gangster decides to do on his time off, but when all is said and done and your ready to carry on with the story you need to drive back home, park your car(or someone else's) and get into bed, what's better, when you wake up (in your vest and pants looking like the deadly killer you are) you go to your wardrobe choose your outfit, call your pal, go to your garage choose your best car (with personalised numberplate) and set off for another days balzin'! However, make no mistake about it, this game just seems to end in the middle of the story, loose ends would be an understatement, I was sat there after the credits had finished rolling thinking its going to carry on now, right? I have just finished Red Dead Redemption, and if that's the game that never ends then this is the opposite! But hey! that's what swap game is for right? If I had purchased this game full retail price I would have been disappointed just because of the lack of re-playability and somewhat frustrating end. In short, great game for any fans of games like GTA, but buy it cheap or better yet rent it as you wont be playing it for long. right quote

left quote To start off with, this is an amazing game, hands down. But this game lacks re playability. There are 15 missions and then once you have finished all you can do is try to get all the trophies or play the Betrayal of Jimmy/Jimmy's Revenge. In the text code of this game hackers found out about 3 other story missions, 10 side missions and multiplayer components and also a future DLC (Joe's Adventures). With these features it could have made the game much more interesting and fun and extendible. It is an epic, emotional and moving story. But the ending is very... I can't stress how frustrating it was! It's worth a rent but when renting you are missing out on the arcade style Jimmy missions and Joe (future) but I kind of regret buying. I need a couple more posters to get the Platinum and I am 13% and 7% on the Jimmy missions. My advice is, if you want this game wait for the price to come down. To sum it up in 6 words, good game but not worth £40 right quote
