Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360) Description

Mass Effect was a great example of how Western role playing games can both tell a story and be engaging in its gameplay mechanic. Working like a space-age shooter one second, and like an interactive adventure book the next, the game saw Commander Shepard taking on invading Reaper aliens who were bent on destroying all kinds of organic life across the universe. He succeeded, but now in Mass Effect 2 - said to be the Empire Strikes Back of the intergalactic RPG trilogy - there’s a new evil force at work. Human colonies are being silently abducted from their homes around the galaxy, and without even knowing his foe, Shepard’s got his work cut out for him. Teaming up with a ruthless human survival organisation called Cerberus, the Commander must find the most elite space warriors and navigators to join his team and stop the human race from being mysteriously wiped out. Shepard’s mission is, against all the odds, suicide - but to save humanity, it’s worth a shot. Train and equip your chosen teammates to ensure they have your back covered during the most difficult battles, and explore the far reaches of the galaxy to scan planets and uncover clues pertaining to your mission. You can also discover secret optional missions that will help change the course of your entire game - multiple endings can be seen depending on your approach to this bleak mission.

- This review contains light spoilers. Mass Effect 2 kicks off just shortly after the events of Mass Effect 1. The status of the galaxy depends on how you load up. If you import your save file from the original game then you’re decisions from that game carry over. If you start fresh, the game will create the back story for you with some clever questioning. Following an attack from an unknown vessel the Normany is destroyed and Commander Sheppard is killed. Two years pass and Sheppard has been revived and ‘rebuilt’. From here you joined a group with a sole purpose is to destroy the Reapers. As before Mass Effect 2 allows you to make decisions in battle, conversation and now even in cut scenes. From time to time you will be given a ‘Paragon’ or ‘Renegade’ option and you can choose to use it or ignore it. These moments are important as they can have lasting consequences; depending on how you play lead characters can die. Graphics are excellent and make great use of the Unreal 3 Engine. Sound is a highlight as you’d expect from a Bioware game. Voice acting especially sounds great, everything from Sheppard to the more bizarre characters you’ll meet along the way. Controls have been streamlined to be more accessible and although this might seem basic at first (especially to the RPG enthusiast), it does open us as you progress and the game is better off for it. Mass Effect 2 doesn’t disappoint. It corrects the technical issues of its predecessor and greatly improves the graphics along the way. The absence of the Mako is not something you’ll miss. Clocking in at between 20-30 hours, it may not be the longest RPG out there but with constant drive, narrative, areas, characters and no grinding, there isn’t a dull moment to be found.

I urge you to complete Mass Effect 1 before playing this for the full experience. I was awe struck when playing this with my original character from the first game. Decisions I'd made in the past actually had an impact on the world around me and every decision I made in this game felt like I'd be dealing with the fallout in the 3rd. Gameplay wise, this game is more action orientated than the first, but it works in it's favour. Everything about this game is great, and this will deffinatly win game of the year in my book.

After playing and loving the original, I pre-ordered Mass Effect 2 with haste, ready to import my character and continue with the epic Science-fiction story. Mass Effect 2 continues 2 years after the first, I won't spoil any of the story here, but its simply fantastic. As soon as you start playing, you'll be hooked, wanting to learn more about the party members your recruiting, and eager to discover what lays next in the plot. Thankfully, its like this throughout, with next-to-no plotholes. You can tell from the start that every detail has been thought about, and can see this while roaming your starship (the Normandy, similar to the first games) where average crew members will chat about whats currently going on, and how they feel about everything. There's plenty of in-depth conversation to be had with your crew members also, and unqiue, special missions for each, if you get friendly enough with them, and on top of this, a chance at romance. At heart, ME2 is an RPG, and while this aspect has been stripped down from the first, its so much more accesible and interesting, you'll soon be extremely happy leveling up certain powers and ablities, and thinking ahead. The inventory system from the first is now gone, replaced by a simple system, where you find loot and its all stored in the Normandy. While, at first, this sounds off-putting, you get used to it, and will prefer it to the mess that was the originals inventory. Mass Effect 1 had quite a clunky and annoying combat system, and the sequel has completely fixed this. If you've played any cover shooters (Gears of War) you'll be right at home here, and get used to the added depth almost instantly (powers, and ordering teammates). Theres plenty of weapons to get your hands on, including some super powerful heavy weapons (yes, a nuke launcher is included) and the combat is extremely fun throughout. Overall, Mass Effect 2 is fantastic. The story, dialog and decisions are perhaps the best in any other videogame. If you love Sci-fi, Story, Action and videogames in general, you'll adore ME2. Game of the Year in January? It may be possible...

Mass effect 2 is so good you will be playing this for days and u wont be able to put the pad down. you will get more from this game if you have played the first one as u can import the save data from the first game. And if u saved sertion people or if they died it will all come into this game. They have taken on bored all the critisum from the first game. the levels have gone where you would drive around planets for ages and u only had a few wepon types now u have to control ur ammo so u will have to use diffrent weppons witch keeps u from using one gun all the time. I love this series it is so good keep it coming please cant wait for the next one.
