Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) Description

Modern Warfare 2 is the sequel to 2007s insanely successful Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which took the classic World War II first person shooting series and adapted it to modern day situations. With the ever-present threat in many people's minds being terrorism, developer Infinity Ward has a lot of material with which to create some gripping fictional shorelines. Set several years after the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, you play as Sgt. Gary "Roach" Sanderson, taking orders from the hero of the last game, "Soap" MacTavish. MacTavish is now a captain and directs your missions as a coalition of CIA, Delta Force, Rangers, and British SAS soldiers travelling across locations in Russia, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan and Brazil. The immediate threat is the Russian Ultranationalist organisation, who have returned to prominence after a leadership takeover by one Vladimir Makarov. Your mission is to counter the strengthening threat emanating from the Ultranationalists. Multiplayer combat will heavily feature in Modern Warfare 2, with the satisfying online death matches returning with new weapons, equipment and rewards that can be earned by collecting experience points. A brand new mode called Special Ops allows for multiplayer co-operative action, drafting players into unique missions that are similar to those found in the single player campaign.

As one of the most critically acclaimed shooters of all time, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a prime example of a tough act to follow. Yet, amidst a raging storm of anticipation and expectation, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has done it. The new campaign is chock-full of intense action and dramatic moments, and though it is more muddled than its predecessor (in more ways than one), it's still an absolute blast. The new Special Ops mode allows you to experience some campaign-inspired thrills with a friend and it's an engaging challenge to coordinate your maneuvers and tackle the varied objectives. Last but not least, the competitive multiplayer that took the online shooter community by storm two years ago is back and better than ever. Though the addictive action remains the same at its core, there are a host of new elements that make it more accessible, more strategic, and more rewarding. This all adds up to a thoroughly excellent package that is sure to thrill shooter fans and deprive them of sleep for months to come. The campaign picks up where its predecessor left off, and there's a new violent ultranationalist terrorist on the scene. Once again, you play as a few different soldiers who are part of the effort to make the world a safer place. Your missions take you around the world to a number of exotic locations and engage you in a variety of different conflicts, ranging from stealthy and silenced to crowded and cacophonous. The action is smooth and exhilarating, thanks to sharp shooting and movement mechanics that allow you to be as quick and deadly as your skills permit. Environments are well-designed and detailed, though many textures don't look particularly good upon close inspection. Modern Warfare 2 isn't a beautiful game, but it looks great in action. The diverse levels not only provide varied sights, but they are cleverly designed to allow the action to flow at an exciting pace. Opportunities for cover and flanking present themselves naturally, allowing you to move through the battlefield in a variety of fluid ways. The aggressive enemy AI will keep you on your toes, and success is hard-earned and satisfying. The result of all these multiplayer tweaks is a richer, more customizable experience and a busier battlefield. Fortunately, the action generally remains on the good side of hectic, and the stream of rewards is as satisfying as ever. Two new elements, title and emblem, are little graphics and titles that you earn through your match performance, and these range run the gamut from serious to totally goofy. While not exactly in keeping with the serious tone of the campaign, they add an amusing way to further customize your online presence. With a robust variety of playlists in which to ply your deadly trade, Modern Warfare 2's competitive multiplayer is the best in the series and one of the best available on consoles. The inelegant campaign plot may make you feel like you're just along for the ride, but it is such an intense, roaringly great ride that you will be glad just to have played it. The cooperative missions provide a uniquely fun angle on the action that rounds out the package superbly, making Modern Warfare 2 thoroughly entertaining, thoroughly rewarding, and thoroughly worth the wait.

Modern Warfare 2 is one the most hyped-up games of recent times; like GTA IV, it's one of those few games that can be called a 'phenomenon' rather than just a game. But phenomenons aren't always the best games. Like GTA IV, this game relies on sticking to the formula of it's predecessor, while making a few stylistic changes. The graphics aren't much of an improvement on CoD4, but the missions are more fast-paced, scripted and intense than in 4, and that really is saying something. The plot also feels more personal, with some old characters returning and several truly shocking twists that draw you into the game. The multiplayer is also a major improvement; there are loads of challenges so you can improve your weapons and get various perks for your character. It also seems fairer, with you no longer getting blown up the second you spawn. The level design is also great, and you really have to make use of the foliage, cracks and crevices if you want to avoid getting killed - forget about going on big shooting rampages, it pays to be careful here. Also, the Spec Ops missions add another layer to the multiplayer; there is a great variety of missions that you can unlock (from stealth to stand-offs) and play through in split-screen or online. As usual, the single-player is too short but the Spec ops and multiplayer really extend the game's longevity. While I found the single-player disappointingly short and similar to CoD4, the game has really improved in the multiplayer aspects to make it one of the best multiplayer experiences money can buy (though the RRP of £54.99 is a bit offensive). Great FPS action.

COD: Modern Warfare 2's single player storyline picks up roughly from where the first instalment left off, casting you as several members of Task Force 141, a squad of heavily armed Rangers tasked with stopping a Russian terrorist named Makarov. Drawing on impressive AI for both allies and enemies as it races from one scripted set-piece to the next, MW2 takes you on a veritable world tour; from stealth based levels in Kazakhstan, to a running battle through Brazilian Favelas to rescuing hostages from a heavily defended oil rig. Each mission in the three-act campaign presents you with different challenges, abilities and controls, so left and right triggers are used for aiming and firing, swinging ice-picks to climb sheer cliffs, piloting a skidoo for an Endor-style chase through trees or controlling the new Predator droid to take out hostile targets by aerial satnav. Along the way there are twists and turns galore, including one controversial level that sees you joining Makarov to massacre passengers at Moscow airport. Graphically, the tweaked IW4 engine copes with up to 40 onscreen enemies at once – particularly impressive in the Brazilian levels where the Black Hawk Down-style action reaches almost multiplayer levels of intensity. All in all, MW2 is exactly what fans were expecting. Yes, it carries a hefty price-tag, a shortish single player campaign and only adds a handful of genuinely new elements to the prequel, but you won't find a more polished, intelligent FPS this year. For non-stop action, superior AI and perfectly balanced weapons, it's a worthy chart-topper that hammers a nail into any hope of the COD franchise returning to its WW2 roots anytime short of the next round of console upgrades. And, on this evidence, you won't find too many complaints about that.
