Dante's Inferno (PS3) Description

Heaven and Hell. Inferno, Paradise and Purgatory. The Pearly Gates, and Fire and Brimstone. If you were to think of these planes of spiritual existence, chances are you'll be thinking of all the things that Dante Alighieri wrote back in 1300s Italy. His epic poem, The Divine Comedy, described a vision for the areas that rests on the extremes of the Christian faith. Dante's Inferno is a story that adopts the images described in Alighieri's poetry. Yes, it's a game of an epic poem. The player controls Dante as he journeys into hell and descends through all nine circles of the Inferno – Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud and Treachery. He does this all to recapture the soul of his lost love, Beatrice. But as a man who doesn't fear death, can Dante succeed in resisting his own sins reflected within these circles? A third person action brawler that takes many cues from games such as Devil May Cry and God of War in terms of gameplay, Dante's Inferno takes a unique approach in recreating classic literature and allows a new generation of players to learn Alighieri's poem and to explore the messages and images conveyed within. All while smacking the hell out of a demon, of course.

I was lucky enough to get this sent out on rental on the day of release, expecting a mediocre game having not played the demo, I was hugely surprised. The game is incredible, there is so much to it, you play through as Dante fighting hordes of enemies at the very start of the game, and in no time you have been murdered and battle with Death itself. Then you go on a quest to save your wife and learn of all of Dante's sins and how he is trying to redeem himself and his wife. Throughout the game you can save/absolve the sins of other damned characters from history or punish them for what they've done. By doing this you can either become holy or unholy and gain new and powerful abilities. And the best thing about the holy/unholy side of the game? They can both work together, you don't have to choose one from the start and stick with it, you can create your own play style using a mix of abilities from both, and then play through the game again with your current abilities to pick up any you have missed. The fighting is slick and smooth, and there is a great feeling of racking up a 200+ hit combo in one fight as you carve through waves of enemies using Death's scythe. The story in the game as well is also amazing, told through a mix of cartoon like cut scenes, and full graphic cut scenes which give a brutal image of the fights taking place and the carnage left. The game also delves a lot into the story of Dante's inferno, as is expected from a game based on such an epic work of literature, but doesn't weaken or lesson the experience at all, and seeing so many historic characters such as Atilla the Hun and many more, and deciding their fate feels awesome. Superb game with brilliant gameplay, epic storytelling, breaktaking graphics, and a whole load of blood and gore.
