Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising (PS3) Description

Promising to take you as close to war as you’ll ever want to get, the sequel to the highly popular Operation Flashpoint sees you as a U.S. military unit defending the fictional island of Skira from invading Chinese forces. The island, located North of Japan in all its sandbox glory, is a historical mark of contention between Chinese, Japanese and Russian forces and war is imminent, with the USSR requiring your assistance. In development for many years, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising includes great detail in both the actions of your men and how the environment works to your advantage. Extensive motion capture has resulted in the weight of real weapons affecting your player movement, and realistic operation of military vehicles. Unlike many shooting games, you’re required to watch for movement as your enemy is not likely to make themselves noticeable to you. A special ‘Hardcore’ mode removes most of the HUD, forcing you to remember just how full your weapons clip really is before engaging in a firefight. There are many online modes and multiplayer activities in the game too, including the obligatory co-operative campaign and deathmatches, along with special covert operations that has players infiltrating enemy lines and clearing certain objectives.

I was one of the few people who was as excited by this as I was by Modern Warfare 2 in the build-up to its release. While MW2 was the Hollywood blockbuster game, Flashpoint 2 was to be the ultra-realistic tactical shooter that demands patience, skill and tactics. My initial impressions upon being dropped down onto the island where all the action takes place is that this is brilliant; you have a choice of what order to tackle your objectives in and though it takes a while to get to any of them without transport (which you can steal), this gives you options about how to approach the objectives. Be warned that this game is relentless; checkpoints are few and far between, it takes only a few shots to die and you can bleed to death if you don't see to your wounds. The single-player is a little bleak, especially since there's no reason you'd want to play it when you have the option of doing the exact same missions but with a team online. This is a credit to the game's great online options, but the single-player should be a fun thing in it's own right, which it isn't mainly because of dodgy team AI and a slightly awkward radial menu through which to issue commands to your team. Don't expect the guns, explosions and SFX of Modern Warfare 2; this game is much more like REAL modern warfare and is a relentless but satisfying game experience. If you manage to convince a couple of your friends to buy it then you could be in for one of the most intense and challenging co-op experiences available – but if you're looking for an engrossing single-player game then look elsewhere.

Operation Flashpoint 2 is an odd one...Its really hard to review. Its a decent tactical modern war simulator/shooter with incredibly realistic gameplay and tactics. It is quite flawed as a game though since the graphics can sometimes let it down with poor textures etc, the controls are sometimes quite awkward and the accuracy on sniper rifles - even if you aim dead on are rubbish also your squad will sometimes run in front of something you tell them to hide behind. Other than those complaints the game is really great. During missions you can choose how to do your objective, where to go and even to go and find something else to do. The game has some strong multiplayer too lots of vehicular combat with 'destructable' environments. Anyway I really enjoyed the game but it is not worth a purchase you are better off renting it because this game is like marmite - you either love it or you hate it.
