Wolfenstein (PS3) Description

1992's Wolfenstein 3D will be forever known as the crazy, cartoony, Robot-Hitler-starring game that propelled the first person shooter into one of the most popular genres in the video games market. Raven Software and Activision Blizzard (with a little help from series creator id Software) have brought secret agent B.J. Blazkowicz back to our monitors (or TVs) as he attempts to stop the Nazis from using the powers of the strange occult force known as Black Sun. The Nazis (damn them!) are trying to get to the source of the Black Sun where they're going to create a weapon of ultimate destruction. Between our reality and the Black Sun lies The Veil which also allows BJ to discover Veil Powers that will help him in his mission. These powers can be used in conjunction with each other, so you can, for example, use one power to look through certain objects, spot an enemy and then use another power to enhance your firepower so you can shoot through the obstruction to kill your opponent. With the addition of puzzles, treasure hunting, weapon and power upgrades to the FPS format and a multiplayer mode that will feel familiar to fans of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, this latest Wolfenstein game is sure to keep fans playing for quite some time.

The best I can say about this game is that it's average. Not to bad but not to good either. My stepson and myself both played it through and came up with the feeling that it was a pretty empty experience, there was nothing in it to keep us coming back so we just played it through till the end, just to say we'd done it. Being old enough to remember Wolfenstein right back to it's very first incarnation (just released on the PSN) this series has never set the world alight for me but some of the games have been kinda fun (Return to castle Wolfenstein sticks out) so I rented this knowing it might not be the greatest game ever but I kinda hoped for more than I got.

This game is boring. The graphics are terrible and almost as bog standard as PS2 graphics, the gameplay is so simple, they have added nothing except the veil, I played this for a few minutes and got so bored, I am sending this back right away.

Wolfenstein returns and if you're fed up of ultra-realistic WW2 combat, then go for Wolfenstein that combines the fun of killing Nazi's with being Rambo, albeit a super-powered super-natural silly named Rambo. The single player campaign has elements of old school blasters, the super-powered fun of The Darkness and although it's not as open world as Far Cry 2 it shares the same kind of mission selection, upgradable weapons and looking around for money/intel. The graphics are good and the death animations are brutal. Nothing more gruesome than a Nazi turning round the corner mid shout just to be shot in the face and the shout to be replaced with crimson gurgling... that's what you get for being a Nazi I guess. The multiplayer is servicable, nothing new and a lot of your time will be spent there if you're after achievements. This or 360? Well, I got the 360 as I prefer the controls for FPS's on the xbox, but if you're used to FPS on Ps3 then get it on this as the graphics are marginly better.
