Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360) Description

Resident Evil, one of the most revered series in gaming, is back to put the willies right up you once again. The fifth game in the series has a lot to live up to, with Resident Evil 4 holding a very special place in the hearts of survival horror fans. Will it be up to it? We hope so. The game sees long-time Resident Evil hero, Chris Redfield, thrust back into the thick of things. And by 'things' we mean 'horde of zombie killers hungry for squelchy brains'. Having chased the undead around the globe and now working for a new organisation, Redfield heads to Africa where a terrifying new bioterrorism threat has emerged. It's turning the people and animals into mindless killers, and it needs sorting out. Redfield isn't alone. He'll have Sheva Alomar to lend her strength, speed, sharpshooting (and sexiness) to his efforts. Sheva's presence is crucial to the game's core mechanics, as she enables both online and offline co-op play. Even when you're just playing with the AI, Redfield and Sheva will get to the serious business of slaying zombies together and you'll need to watch each other's backs to survive. As with past Resi titles, gameplay is tight and tense. You'll have to be ruthlessly efficient as you pop off headshots and try to conserve your limited ammo. Keeping a cool head is the name of the game! Not necessarily so easy, since you're in Africa...

Resident Evil 5 is the follow up to the wildly successful Resident Evil 4 and given that success Capcom has apparently been playing it safe with this iteration. It’s a fair point to make that this instalment plays almost identically to its predecessor. Now, if that’s good news or bad news really depends on your experience with Resident Evil 4. The shooting feels tight and responsive - but sadly you still can’t move and shoot at the same time. Many of the same canned death animations have been carried over and the dead bodies still bubble out of existence as before. Many of these issues didn’t matter last time but with new technology now, it’s less forgivable than it was before. You play as Chris Redfield, one of the original protagonists of the series. Chris is joined this time by Sheva, a native of the, conveniently, unnamed region. For the first time in the series you can play the entire game in co-op, both split screen and online. Series villain Albert Wesker returns and provides the main attraction of the plot. His hammy dialogue is provided with just enough corniness to make it enjoyable if hardly believable. The plot as a whole fails to draw you in and only distances you from the characters you control. As is the normal with Capcom the presentation is exceptionally high. Graphics are fantastic and the sound (minus the voice acting) carries a high quality. The actors do the best job with the script their given but it’s hard to look past how stupid it all is, even in the context of the world in which it’s set in. Bosses are great too although a couple of occasions they fall back on the ‘tentacle bosses’ that just come off as lazy and uninspired. Quick Time Events return and love them or hate them they serve their part. Many play out as interactive cut scenes and the reward for hitting them correctly is usually worth it. Others are in place to allow you to make a quick dodge; missing it results in taking damage or death. The additional Mercenaries mode is fun for a couple of hours and can also be played online. For action game fans, Resident Evil 5 should not be missed. For those who desperately need to learn the next chapter in the saga – well, you should probably read some better literature; this is not a series that is known for its plot.

Brilliant survival/horror/action game. This was the first RE I played, and instantly loved it. The beginning has a very tense and spooky setting, and within no time you have to defend yourself against hordes of zombies and a huge axe wielding boss. Running away is normally not an option, but in this game, it becomes vital to know what battles to fight, and what battles to flee from. The game is great fun either solo or with a friend (co-op) and has plenty of collectibles to keep you playing and replaying. And when you have finally finished the single player in all modes possible, there is a mercenaries pack with scenarios where you fight against non stop hordes of enemies within a limited time to rack up a score. And also now there are new DLC packs with other single player/co-op content. The fun never ends! (note: review of PS3 version, but essentially same)

The Resident Evil series has always had a rep for being spine-chillingly scary; it was pure survival horror. This is why I was surprised when I heard that the new one was more of an all-out action game set in Africa with impoverished Africans as zombies. Sounds distasteful I thought, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game. The developer's decision to make this an action title was a bad one. It seems to have kept some survival horror elements which prevent it from a proper action game, yet the lack of suspense means it's hardly survival horror. The fact that you can't run-and-gun is extremely frustrating when the zombies have developed the ability to run themselves, and the action sequences are generally unspectacular. While the single-player mode is dull, this game was pretty much made to be played co-operatively, and this definitely adds a layer of fun to it. The graphics are also fairly pretty but for me this means little if the game generally lacks direction. This is not a bad game but it just doesn't cut it as an action title compared to something like Uncharted 2, and for survival horror try Dead Space instead. While that may seem like a harsh comparison, there are certain benchmarks for a good action game and apart from the co-op mode, Resi Evil 5 fails to meet them. OK game, but should've been much more than that.

Good game and particularly like the fact that you can play the co-op. However I haven't played a Resident Evil game since number 1 so I don't really have a clue as to what was going on! I'd recommend playing the others first or reading up on the story line.

Resident Evil 5 was one of those games we gasped at when we saw the early shots back before XBox 360 was even launched. That seems like a real long time ago now - we waited a long time for this game. The previous Resident Evil 4 was the pinnacle for me, it was truly an amazing game. Whilst Resident Evil 5 is by no means a bad game, it's noticable that it's not as good as 4 was. Of course, the graphics are a HUGE leap forwards from the last game, but that's about all. Resi 5 has lost the scare factor... there's the odd cut scene that's a little gruesome, which is what we want, but for the most part, it's just not a scary game like 4 was. It tries to pull a LOT of the same tricks too - chainsaw guys running at you, quick time moments that are blindingly obvious... although they work well, it's a like a cheap comedy film sequel, where all the same jokes are used again. The 2 player co-op is excellent with either split screen or online - this tends to be much better than the single player, because the AI isn't exactly great. Too many times, your partner will be shooting a huge monster with her handgun when she has something much more formidable on her. If you play it this way, you'll get used to just leaving her with her handgun alone, because there's no point in giving her anything else. It sounds like I'm knocking the game, and I suppose I am, but that's because Resi 4 was such an amazing game, we were bound to be expectant for this one. It's still a really great game overall, and if you're a Resi fan, you should definitely experience it.
