Brütal Legend (Xbox 360) Description

Double Fine's Brutal Legend may at first appear to have all the makings of a dumb and dumber videa game cliché: a heavy metal band's roady called Eddie Riggs. Somehow you have been thrown back through time only to land in the fabled Age of Rock. You have to escape. See, add to the fact that Eddie is voiced by Hollywood's favourite comedy actor in Jack Black and this game, from the mind of Pyschonaut creator, Tim Schafer could have ended up as bleakly dull as say... Dumb and Dumberer. Thankfully, Schafer is a deft video game maker who packs both humour and gameplay into his creation. So, this open world action adventure game is not simply aimed at the hairy adolescent who wants to rock out. In fact, Eddie finds himself having to lead a set of the local residents who have been repressed by evil, supernatural masters. All this plays out in a richly realised world that could have featured on a million album covers. Joining Jack Black and his Flying-V guitar ('Clementine ), super-charged hotrod car (The Druid Plow), and battle axe are the voices of Motorhead's Lemmy, Rob Halford from Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, Lita Ford of the cult girl-band the Runaways, and Tim Curry of Rocky Horror Show fame. The whole escapade is played out in a huge game environment of some 64 square kilometres with the player in charge of Eddie from the third-person perspective. Rather than a straight-up hack and slash, Brutal Legend borrows a little from games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band, with Eddie having to play tunes such as 'Earthshaker' in order to defeat his foes and save the humans. All in all, it's an engrossing outing that requires something more than button mashing: yes, you need a sense of humour, a keen brain and, of course, the spirit of Rock!

Brutal Legend is an awesome game. And also a weird one. But weird means original here, and that's a good thing, because you don't get too much of that nowadays. It cleverly takes a very original story and concept and mixes it with some familiar gameplay types and mechanics to make a title that should grace anyone's collection if they have even a passing interest for rock or metal music. You follow Eddie Riggs, a roadie for the tween-punk awful bands of today calling themselves rock. Eddie is old skool - like real old skool... the seventies? naaah the EARLY seventies [joke lifted directly from game :o) ]. Eddie is a no nonsense, hard-livin, chain-smokin, beer drinkin metal head who can fix together just about anything in engineering terms. The opening sequence sees Eddie fixing up a show for one of those awful bands, and without giving away any more of the cool gags and stuff, Eddie ends up dead. His blood drips into his belt buckle, which happens to open a portal, transporting Eddie to another dimension of metal music, corpse piles, monsters and engines. Yes - engines. Because as I said, Eddie is handy with a spanner, and puts together all sorts of contraptions to help transport you around the vast open world. The game is essentially in a sandbox where you can go anywhere to explore and collect missions, but when you start a mission, invariably it takes you to the part of the map you need to be at, and it will have a guided path to what you're doing, which is quite clever. Eddie himself is armed with a very cool, very sharp and oversized axe [to match his oversized hands - you'll see what I mean] to hack and slash at his enemies, akin to say, God of War, with some nice splashes of blood and decapitations and whatnot. He's also armed with an electric guitar, which in this world when played, fries Eddie's enemies where they stand. Yes - Metal is THAT awesome. Combining button presses between the two, you can put together some nice combos that will both slap your enemies around, and cleft them in twain. Nice. The final and most surprising element to this game is - wait for it - real time RTS(!?) Yup, you will summon different characters with different abilities by playing varying riffs on your guitar, and these characters will then swarm around you and be at your command, not too different from Pikmin or Overlord actually. The varying characters and their corresponding specific ability is usually relevant to advance through certain areas, and this type of addition to the game is extremely unusual for a game of this type, but extremely welcome. The little followers are often hilarious - the first lot you get, the Headbangers, will have you creased up as you have a pack of them following you... I won't spoil the rest, but there are more metal-style tongues in cheek here than you could shake a stick at. Eddie will let out some nice exclamations off the cuff as he offs his enemies, and they're usually very funny, because as you probably know, Eddie is voiced by the legendary Jack Black. It's great because of it too, because you can tell that Jack enjoyed doing it. It's a very funny story from beginning to end with lots of nods and winks to rock and metal artists through the last 3 decades, and those fans of this genre of music will find a lot to love and laugh at here. The characters are animated superbly with some of the best speech modelling I've seen so far, and it all wraps in with an awesome metal soundtrack from greats such as Black Sabbath and Motorhead. Hell - even some famous musicians from these bands pay a visit in cameo, but I won't spoil it by saying who. Lets just say it's awesome. There is multiplayer here, and it's a lot of fun getting online with your friends, though I admit I haven't been online much yet. I'm still playing it though, which says something. The last thing that must get a mention is the title screen. Yes, the title screen. There's an opening sequence where Jack, as himself just on camera, walks you into a record store... it unfolds from there and ends up with his hands presenting the title screen in the form of a LP vinyl record. As you flick through the menu options on the screen, you go through the process of flipping over the vinyl, opening it, taking out the record, flipping that over... it's hard to explain, but it's just so brilliantly put together. Absolute genius. You'll totally see what I mean when you play it. Overall, Brutal Legend is a fantastic game - I just hope it gets the sales it deserves amongst the big-hitters this christmas, because I want a sequel out of this. Buy it, love it, rock it. Or something like that.
