Street Fighter IV (PS3) Description

Set between Street Fighter II and Street Fighter III, Street Fighter IV is the latest game in Capcom's long running and famous beat 'em up series, and the first all-new Street Fighter game since 1999. Street Fighter, along with Mortal Kombat, is something of a legend among arcade beat 'em up fans. Where recent console versions of MK have moved into the third dimension, Street Fighter has remained true to its 2D arcade origins, although the backgrounds in SFIV are lovingly-rendered in 3D. The characters too are 3D rendered, and then visually treated to make them look like traditional 2D computer characters. The result is the best looking Street Fighter game the world has yet seen. All your favourite characters are back, including Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and Blanka, along with a range of new characters that players may have seen in the arcade version of the game: Abel, Crimson Viper, Rufus and El Fuerte. But home console versions of the game also get extra charachters not included in the arcade version of SFIV, including Cammy and Fei-Long from Super Street Fighter II, Dan and Rose from Street Fighter Alpha, Sakura from Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Gen from Street Fighter. The action, as always is about head-to-head combat, but SFIV has some new features not seen in previous versions, and the return of some favourite features from previous versions. All new is the Focus Attack. This is a move where the player can absorb the power of his opponent's attack by holding the medium punch and kick buttons, and then use it in a counter attack. The longer the player absorbs attacks for, the more powerful his counter attack will become. Super Combos from previous games are back, and now there are Ultra Combos - long sequences of linked moves that you can unleash when your Revenge Gauge is full.

Street Fighter IV is a demonstration of exactly how to go about reviving an old, but beloved franchise. It doesn't have the drudgery and saminess as the perpetual Tekken and Virtua Fighter updates, no, it does something very special instead. It feels like an altogether new game, yes it has an undoubted sense of familiarity and almost tradition whilst maintaining it's cutting edge status. Remarkable. You have a good number of the usual characters, Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, M-Bison etc - basically, all those who were in the original SF II lineup, with a few new additions too. The characters move sets are all extremely varied and are for the vast majority very well balanced, so there won't be too many matches where picking the female characters means getting annihilated... hey, don't blame me, blame Capcom for making the early versions with weak female fighters(!) They're certainly not present here though - each and every character has some truly devastating special moves and combos, particularly the ultra combos if you use them to finish off someone's energy gauge, you will be treated to an explosion of colours and mayhem on screen. The animation of the character models is nothing short of spectacular. There are some truly awesome moves to watch, and they're all executed with devastating speed and ferocity, with not even a hint of any slowdown in the frame rate. Couple together suitable weighty punch and kick sound effects, along with some nicely woeful groans of pain and despair from the beaten characters, and it all comes together to wrap you up in it's HD glory. I just can't think of anything to compare it to, because it's so rare that an aged franchise can be refreshed in such a way, but they've managed it. SF IV is easily the best fighting game available today, and it deserves a place in any fighting fans collection.

This game is good dependent on your preference of modern fighting games. I you like full 3D such as Tekken or Virtua Fighter it is hard to enjoy it because you feel restricted. Street fighter fans such as myself will enjoy this as it contains all the things necessary from the same controls ad all the popular characters e.g. Bison, Chun li, Ken, Vega etc. as well as that the controls are good and same too. New characters are ok but they are not too good against anyone in my opinion. Online gaming sucks due to disconnection rates and lag. Good rent if you will want to play against others online and if fighting games don't appeal that much but buy only if you wanna play offline quiet a bit and if you are a big fan. Overall gameplay and graphics are good and playing is fun and addictive.

Wow this was over rated by nearly everyone. I've been around long enough to have played all iterations of this game and this one is no different from the others. Yes, yes the graphics are updated but that never really mattered on with SF games, plus 2.5D graphics look and feel a bit lame these days..even MKvDC looked better (and played better with a better story)...and what's with the giant Hulk feet for everyone? The important thing for SF games was always the game play and this one seems to have something off about it. Maybe it's down to the special powered up moves being almost unstoppable or that you can still take a good beating from a button masher or maybe the real issue is that this hasn't improved, changed or done anything different for well over a decade. Also unless you want to splash out on a £80+ joystick the PS3 pad is close to unusable especially online against those that have the joystick, you just get boringly and continually panelled into the floor. I can honestly say I more enjoy Drake's (Fortune) panicky fist swinging fights than all of SF4's move list. Oh and the stories, as always with SF games, are bloody awful. Fighting games need to start looking for a new way forward, they are getting very dull very fast.

I was quite disappointed with this one. The graphics don't look anywhere near as impressive as they did in static magazine screenshots and the sound is nothing special either. That leaves the gameplay, which is not as responsive as in the 2D iterations and just goes over the top on ridiculous button sequences and combinations. Personally, I would much rather play Street Fighter 2 HD (released on XBL/PSN), Marvel vs. Capcom (shortly to be released onXBL/PSN), or even Street Fighter Alpha (original PSOne version available on PSN store) .

It's quite fun, it's worth a rent I personally wouldn't buy it though. I only played it a few times as I found it a little too hard. Having said that I am no expert at fighting games. I enjoyed playing Street Fighter 2 in the arcade and this game is essentially just a pretty version of the old classic. It is really fun playing local multiplayer and it's quite satisfying when you win! However if you intend to play this online be prepared to get beaten again and again. All in all it's fun for a few games but if you already have a copy of street fighter 2 (xbox live arcade, or playstation store etc) I don’t think you really need to coin out for this remake.
