Afro Samurai (PS3) Description

Afro Samurai is a platform fighting game from Namco Bandai, loosely based on the Manga and Anime of the same name. The game is rendered in cel-shaded 3D, that gives it an incredibly effective comic book style. The result is one of the most visually stunning games ever seen, and the style is particularly well suited to the storyline and subject matter of the game. The game itself is a fairly straightforward free-roaming fighting game, similar in style to Prince of Persia and Ninja Gaiden. The story goes that whoever can become Number One and don the ceremonial headband will be granted powers of a god, and will rule the world. But only Number Two can challenge Number One. Because of this, the Number Two position is under great competition, and changes hands frequently often before the holder gets a chance to challenge Number One. Afro's father was Number One until he was killed by a gunman called Justice. Afro witnessed this as a child. In the game, Afro Samurai is now an adult, and he is also the current Number Two. The game follows his adventures as he attempts to find and challenge Justice, and become Number One. As Afro progresses towards Number One's mountaintop keep, the Empty Seven Clan sends wave after wave of agents to attemtp to kill Afro and take his Number Two headband. Players get the chance to try and defeat Justice, using a combination of sowrdplay, hits, kicks and blocks. The game features the voices of Samuel L Jackson as Afro, as well as Kelly Hu and (Hellboy) Ron Perlman. Although the title is visually stunning, it is extremely heavy on blood and gore, and features depictions of nudity that make it well deserving of its BBFC 18 certificate.

Afro Samurai would get a higher rating here, if it weren't for one thing.... variety. Quite simply, it gets boring after the first level or so very, very quickly. And it's sad, because that initial level is very impressive. The graphics are lovely and suit the game perfectly, the waves and waves of enemies are all excellent to look at, especially when at their peak in numbers on screen and the combos of moves you have at your disposal are fun to watch. However, when several levels later your character hasn't progressed and your still doing the same combos, you will be bitterly disappointed, because it could have been so much more. I thought this was going to a "Kung Fu Chaos" HD, but it's nowhere near as much as fun as Chaos was. I think that's the key with this game - it's more disappointing, because you see it's potential. I mean, you have Sammy L Jackson voicing the main character, you have an excellent, plinky plunky ninja style sound track and you have some lovely graphics and environments, but it's all boring beyond the first 20 minutes. You should give this a rent, as it is a giggle for at least a short while, but I'd put my money away if you were thinking of buying.

Big on style, little on substance. The game is a stylish, action packed, bloodbath, but that is about it. The hoardes just keep on coming and coming with little to break it up which leads to you getting so bored and frustrated that you would rather watch the weakest link... Give the game some depth and a bit more to do and it would be great, but as it stands it is just another cash in game with little about it. Yeah its cool to slice and dice some enemies, but not solidly for 8 odd hours

a broken, glitchy game thats fun in parts, frustrating in others. Needs a patch or recall badly, audio drops out on intros and during the game, shouldnt have to put up with this. Even if the audio and bugs fixed this a poor mans "ninja gaiden" and should only be rented if you really must play it.
