The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena (PS3) Description

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena continues the story of one Richard B. Riddick, possibly the last member of the Furyan race and an infamous galactic criminal with many escapes from high security prisons to his credit.

One such escape was from the Butcher Bay triple max security prison, an escape that was shown in the game The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, which was very well received by fans and reviewers alike, on the Xbox and PC. Dark Athena is more than just a sequel to that game: it actually comes with the first game, which is good news for anybody that didn't get a chance to play Butcher Bay.

Both games are set before the events in Pitch Black, the film that introduced Riddick to the world. Also, both are first-person, stealthy shooters that involve both close-in and ranged combat styles. However, while Butcher Bay involves a prison escape, the new campaign sees Riddick fighting for his life while dispatching the crew of the mercenary ship Dark Athena.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena boasts 20 hours of play across the two campaigns as well as six online multiplayer modes to keep you busy. You're not afraid of the dark, are you?

This game would get an outright 5 stars, ten out of ten, AAA, slap my face and call me judy etc etc IF it didn't have Dark Athena on the disc ruining the original Butcher Bay. First off - Butcher Bay was amazing. It still is. It was my absolute favourite title by a mile on the original Xbox, so this sequel was always gonna get real scrutinised by me. They have done a wonderful job in updating Butcher Bay and it really is the definitive version of that game to play. Infact, enjoying that game all over again before Dark Athena made me realise even more, just how much better the original was. Dark Athena is not a bad game by any means, it is just overshadowed by Butcher completely. The story and characters in Butcher Bay are just amazing, whereas I found them quite weak in Athena. Graphics are of course better in Athena, but it's the only feather in it's cap. Athena is the 19 year old page 3 model who looks fantastic but has no brains, whereas stood next to it is Butcher, the 30-odd year old ex page 3 glamour girl who still looks hot AND has brains. We know who we'd jump into a pool of treacle with any day, and despite her looks, it aint Athena. I'd score Athena just a 3, whereas Butcher gets a 5 - so I think an overall 4 is fair. Athena sullies it's predecessor, but you'll still enjoy it.

Wow. Assault on dark athena really is a stunning game and excellent value for money. not only do you get a revamped version of the xbox classic escape from butcher bay but a whole new story line as riddick, after escaping from the depths of butcher bay is taken captive onboard the dark athena space craft and must again sneak, slash and slaughter his way to freedom. gameplay is mainly stealth with small sections where the best way to get by is with all guns blazing. the action is controlled very well and atmosphere is created beautifully as you lurk in the shadows waiting for your victim to turn his back on you and then silently creep up on him, press the L2 trigger and watch him fall to the ground. weapons are fairly basic. shotguns, assault rifles and knifes are the most common but enemy drones can also be manned which adds a completely new aspect to gameplay. Kill an enemy drone and you can hold his body as a shield which will absorb gun shots and his assault rifle can then be used to rain down some major "pwnage" on any other enemies lurking nearby. few games out there offer as much as assault on dark athena does. you get two games for the price of one and a solid multiplayer to increase longevity. graphics are very pretty and although the gun sections could do with a slight tweaking the games excellent stealth sections make up for this slight flaw. one of the best games out there people, highly recomended.

This is a great game. Graphics are good, game play and controls are also good. Butcher bay's new HD face lift looks all shinny and new. It's hard to believe at times that your playing a game that's 5 years old. I was lucky because I hadn't played the original when it came out so I found it extra enjoyable to have two full games in my sweaty little palms. When your put into third person view you get an almost life like image of Riddick which does look stunning. The hand to hand combat is great and always results in cranberry juice all over the shop..... Assault on Dark Athena is also a good game with great graphics and some enjoyable moments when using the mech's etc.... definitely worth a rent......

I dont think the reviewer before me meant to give the game a 1 star judging by his review and as the 1 star makes the game look bad I shall review it also. The game consists of the 2004 classic "Escape from butcher bay" and the new "Assault on Dark Athena" with some multiplayer features that are a good distraction, but not much else. Escape from butcher bay is one hell of a game with amazing graphics, dark atmosphere and you actually feel as badass as Riddick is. Gaming at its best. However the newer "Assault on Dark Athena" is not. It is still a fun game but 7/10 at best. For some reason it just doesnt feel right and lasts a god few hours longer than it should. You can tell why they added the old game. The first game is a 10/10 and the second is a 7/10 so really this game is 17/10 or 8.5* Worthy of a purchase, let alone a rent
