Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360) Description

Left 4 Dead (L4D) is a new action title from Valve, creators of the Counter-Strike and Half-Life games, and promises to redefine the co-operative genre as those titles did for multiplayer and single player action games.

Set in a modern day survival-horror universe, the co-operative gameplay of L4D casts four "Survivors" in an epic struggle against hordes of swarming zombies and terrifying "Boss Infected" mutants.

Valve's next generation AI technology, allows for games of 1 to 8 players. Players can play as a Survivor or as one of four types of "Boss Infected," each of whom possess a unique mutant ability such as a 50-foot tongue lasso or a giant belly full of explosive methane gas.

The gameplay takes place across four massive campaigns. The "zombie" population of each mission is choreographed by an "AI Director" that monitors the human players' actions and creates a unique and dramatic experience for them on the fly.

Hundreds of zombies shuffling around moaning is pretty boring - it reminds me of the crowds in a shopping centre the day before Christmas (but with less brain eating). However, hundreds of zombies running towards you at full pelt screaming their heads off is a lot scarier! That's what makes this game so different to other zombie games - the zombies are pretty terrifying. The other main attraction of this game is the co-op play. Most online games pit you against other players, or have a co-op mode where everyone just runs about on their own anyway. However if you don't stick with your teammates in this game you will most definitely wind up dead - you need your comrades to help you escape zombie hoardes and to patch you up. You are expected to do the same for them as well of course! Another nice touch to this game is the way it treats the whole thing like a movie - each campaign starts with a movie poster showing the characters and who is playing them. The end of each campaign has rolling credits showing stats for each player. The graphics and sound are very good like any quality xbox game, and the controls are simple but effective. The only things that disappointed me slightly with this game were the single player mode (it's just the online game but with computer controlled teammates), the background story (there is none, you just accept that there are zombies everywhere) and the weapons (the ones there are are great fun but there so few, and where is the chainsaw!). However, being someone who likes single player games with a great story, I still liked Left 4 Dead as it doesn't try to be anything but an all out action, pick up and play co-op game. I don't play many online games but I found myself enjoying this a lot - jumping online and playing through a campaign with three strangers who you hope make it out with you is something not many games can claim to offer.

Left 4 dead is an amazing game. It is a zombie, survival, 1st person shooter. Even though there is single player you can play it with upto four other people in coop. This is what brings out the best in the game. The graphics are great with lots of zombies heading towards you it runs smooth. You have 4 different characters to play with. There are some killer zombies too. The hunter will pin you down and claw you untill you die or a team mate saves you. The witch can instantly kill you one hit and the tank also can knock you about with ease. It has a mix of zombies and lots of weapons to keep the game fresh and keep you coming back for more. One of the best modes to play is vs mode where you can actually become the zombies themselves. Your your aim is to stop the humans from reaching there destination and vice versa. This is alot of fun regardless of which side you are if you have 3 other friends to play with it can be one of the best coop games. Definitely worth a rent and if you have friends to play with a worthy purchase

AAAAAAARGH!!! God damn, this is one scary game.... I knew it was a zombie game, hell I LIKE zombie games, but I was expecting the usual arms held out, slow shuffling movement, moaning undead vegetables that you usually see in movies and games... how wrong I was. Nothing prepares you for it if you know nothing of it... *IF YOU PREFER SURPRISES, DON'T READ THIS BIT - SPOILER!* I was playing the game and was about 8 minutes in or something, not very far. Then I decided it would be funny to shoot this car and set off the alarm, and all hell broke loose. Hordes and hordes of zombies came flocking from all directions, and they weren't hobbling or shuffling - they were full on Linford Christie sprinting at me, snarling, growling, screaming and arms outstretched... After I had cleaned my pants up, I carried on with the game. And WHAT a game. There are few if any games that raise my heartbeat as much as Left 4 Dead does... I mean it is literally beating out of my chest sometimes with the intense action on screen. And that was just the single player experience! They have a function called AI Director on this which jumbles up the hordes of Zombies, so no more of those scripted scares you got in games like Doom 3... basically, every time you play, none of the rushes of zombies are in the same place, they're kept moving around to new places all the time, always keeping that scare factor right up there, and it's oh-so clever for it. Really - even now, about 12 months on, I can still put this game on and be just as scared as the first time I played it, it's that good. Left 4 Dead as you may have guessed shines most when you are in multiplayer. Whether this is with people you know, or just people you meet on Xbox Live is irrelevant... OK, groups known to each other will work close together immediately, but I noticed that if you don't know a player, the crazy action on screen, and the camaraderie of helping others stay alive, really make for some great moments and perfect times to make some new trusted friends on Live. I mean, if "that dude in Seattle" saved your butt 5 times in a row, you'd feel some sort of new connection too, so not only is Left 4 Dead a great game, it's also a great tool in a social networking sense for Xbox Live. You can make some great new amigos through this game, and can end up improving other games on Live by meeting them online on to play other games. This will help you stop getting into matches filled by trashtalking teenagers, which is always welcome. All in all, Left 4 Dead is simply awesome. If you like playing games online, then this is possibly the best FPS you'll get... yes, I preferred it CoD *shock, horror!*. You should definitely buy this game...

The zombies are coming, should you fight your way through the horde, or turn and run for your life? You might do both. Left 4 Dead, the newest title from developer valve, is the story of you and your friends shouting and screaming at each other underneath the sounds of bullets and zombie groans. This multiplayer/co-op focused first person shooter is the finest example of people working together to overcome ever increasing danger, which in this title is represented by hundreds; no, thousands of zombies rushing to eat your face off. Throughout four different campaigns, made up of 5 chapters each, you will be running, shooting and healing in game, while you’re shouting, screaming and laughing sitting on the coach. What you’re running and shooting away/at can be different every time you play Left4Dead. Every level is controlled by something called the “A.I Director”, which changes where the zombies are placed throughout levels and how the density of the horde at that time. So for example you could start a level by gearing up with your friends in a save room, opening a door into the level and walk through a number of areas with only a handful of zombies. You could then load up that same level again, gear up, walk out the door and be rushed by screens of zombies straight away. What this “A.I Director” does is try to make each instance of a level fresh and keep the anxiety levels up high, as you’ll never know what is around the corner next. Playing Left4Dead with friends could not be easier, whether you’re playing online with 3 different friends from around the world online, or you’ve got a buddy sitting next to you playing local co-op. It’s worth noting however that there is only 2 player local co-op with split screen so people looking for 4 player split screen may be disappointed. Other short comings of Left4Dead are that your arsenal of zombie killing equipment can seem quite limited. The weapons are the standard fair of a pistol, shotguns and machine guns. With only 2 different types of the later 2, some more variation would have been nice. The biggest downfall of Left4Dead is that if you’re going to be playing on your own with the A.I controlling the 3 other team mates you may not agree with the amount of fun everyone else seems to be getting from this classic to be game. On your own, wiping through waves of zombies can get a bit boring fast, and when you get though the 4 campaigns you’ll wonder what all the fuss is about. So for all the single players out there Left4Dead may not be the game for you, but if you needed an excuse to start playing a game with other people, L4D should be at the top of your list.
