Bioshock (PS3) Description

Bioshock begins as your plane plummets into icy and uncharted waters and you are forced to enter a lighthouse oddly located in the middle of the ocean. Discovering a primitive diving bell inside the structure, you board it and travel to the bottom of the ocean and into the haunting world of ‘The Rapture’. You discover that ‘The Rapture’ was once a utopian society created shortly after The Second World war for only the best scientists, doctors and artists, but has been ravaged after a war over ‘Adam’, a genetic enhancement that gives people almost superhuman powers. Arriving after the great genetic war, the player finds the civilisation battered and blood-soaked, home only to those humans who were mutated beyond imagination by the very weapons they used in their great war. As the player proceeds through the dark and violent society, they will encounter many of the mutated beings left over from the conflict, from small girls who feed off the dead to create ‘Adam’, to the ‘Big daddies’- huge biomechanical creatures armed with deadly weapons. The player will pass through the underwater buildings and harness ‘Adam’ to mutate themselves like the residents of ‘The Rapture’ to gain control of new weapons ranging from telekinesis to the ability to produce fire from your hands. ’The Rapture’ itself is rusting and decaying, creating a city of fear without light, smeared with blood and filled the screams of its former citizens. As the game progresses, the player must employ new tactics to defeat some of the more heavily armoured members of the nightmarish underwater colony. The ‘Big daddies’ will not go down easily and you will have to take advantage of your environment as well as your mutations to finish them off once and for all. You will be met with the most important of choices: save the civilisation or exploit them to allow yourself to escape their hellish world.

Bioshock is definitely one of those essential games on the current generatiion of HD consoles. It is absolutely genre defining, by taking traditional FPS elements and melding them into an intricate and [almost] believable story, then mixing in some elements that could be compared to RPGs with magics or powers for your character, it gives you endless fun options of killing the foes you come across. There's the usual staple of guns like handguns, shotguns, machine guns etc, but since ammo is scarce in Rapture, you'd better have something else on hand. And that's your plasmids. Basically, a genetic injection that gives you powers ranging from being able to fry your enemies with fire or electricity, or even freeze them where they stand and smash their frozen self to pieces with your wrench. The mix up of these powers and weapons ensures that you always have a fun and deadly way of dispatching any of the malformed crazy residents of Rapture. And that's where the meat of this game is - killing stuff. And it's a lot of fun to do so. The mind boggles at the number of interesting and sick [and fun!] ways that you can actually kill your enemies, and it's a joy to continue discovering new ways to combine your plasmid powers with your weapons and even the environments themselves. For instance, if a splicer is stood in water, you can electrocute him directly, or you can just do this to the water and electrocute him that way (and anyone else also touching the water). The atmosphere they have created for your enemies to stalk you and vice versa, is both chilling and exciting at the same time. There are some scripted scare moment which certainly work on your first play through very well. You'll also find yourself jumping sometimes as you turn a corner and a splicer is just stood there.... it all weaves together to suck you into Rapture supremely, and you won't want this game to end. Overall - you should have this game. Really, you should. If you have a Wii and no HD console, buy a 360 or PS3 just to play this game, you owe it to yourself.

I owe a lot to this game. before playing this game I was close to giving up video games. As i considered whether I was starting to get maybe a little to old for video games, i played many of the popular games at the moment and got bored. In started to play this game with little hope of it resurrecting my interest in my PS3. Boy was I wrong. In my opinion this is THE game of the PS3. It has a unique blend of awesome graphics, story line and gameplay. It is creepy enough to keep you on your toes and raise the hair on your arms without totally freakin you out, such as games like silent hill and condemned. The story line is in depth and thoughtful. I really cannot praise this game enough!
