Mirror's Edge (PS3) Description

Mirror's Edge gives a new twist to the first person shooter/stealth game by putting the focus on speed and the motion of the player, rather than concentrating on dodging, taking cover and shooting. Mirror's Edge puts you in the shoes of a runner falled Faith - a courier who carries confidential information in a future where information is a highly prized resource. Runners have to get from point A to point B without being intercepted and stopped. And there's always someone who wants to intercept or stop you. You need to use "The Flow": the layout of the rooftops, walls, fences, pipes and ducts to facilitate your peregrination across the city. Faith isn't heavily armed, but her opposition often is, so her best method of survival is flight, stopping to use force only when required. Faith can run, jump, wall-run, boost and vault over things. She can shimmy along ledges, she can shin up pipes, she can zip down wires. She can use her Flow Vision to see which things are usable and which ones are not. It's no good taking a swan dive off the edge of a building if there is nowhere to land on the other side. Faith needs to use all these skills to keep moving and keep avoiding danger. If you do get cornered, Faith is not helpless, she packs a mean punch. She can use her skills to outfox an opponent and disarm him. Yes, in this dystopian big-brother future, gender stereotyping is still prevalent, although Faith's a heroine, her opponents are male to a man. And once she has captured a weapon, she can use it in good old fashioned third person shooter style. The city of the game is bright and sterile, a shocking contrast to the cities of the William Gibson novels, and Johnny Mnemonic movie from which it clearly draws its inspiration. It is rendered in a sharp technical style, and the characters are manga-like. This gives Mirror's Edge an incredible visual appeal, which is quite unlike any previous game. Mirror's Edge is different enough to be of interest to most action gamers, but it will be particularly of interest to those who love cyberpunk and the works of William Gibson.

The whole point of this game was to shy away from a 3rd person view that you would normally expect with a title who's main aim is to leap from place to place. Sadly, as good as an idea as this sounds, I don't think it actually works. I found a lot of the controls imprecise and laggy, making some of the more difficult stunts nigh on impossible. You will die a lot on this game, but it soon loses it's fun after the Nth time you've died... there seems not enough fun to keep you hungry for trying harder. It's sad, because visually the game is very appealing - it has a colour palette and art direction all of it's own. You can certainly say that Mirror's Edge is unique in this respect. As much as I didn't feel it worked very well, I would still recommend at least giving it a rent to see how you get on with it. It's so cheap now that, if you like it, it may be worth picking up for a tenner or something.

The thing that attracted me to this title was my curiosity. I was unsure what to class it as, and am still after countless hours of fun and frustration unable to figure out what this game wants to be. It is for the most part a first person game that requires you to pull of death defying leaps of faith to get away from the people policing your world. It is breathtaking if you can get to grips with the flow and controls and quite annoying when you can't. It is fairly easy to pick up and start, giving the gamer a starting level that is short and light on difficulty. This however will very soon progress into challenges that will take a retry or two before you figure it out. The environment is stunning in my opinion. Set upon the very bright rooftops of a future city broken up by quite varied internal portions that are all very clean and minimalist. The combat system is almost non existent requiring you to disable your foe quickly and then choose to either be a pacifist and keep running or engage the enemy with the gun of your stunned victim. This however is not advisable as the guns have almost no ammo and aiming and being precise can be a problem when you have up until now gone with the flight not fight option and are almost panicked into shooting quickly just so that you can get the hell out of there. The story is quite simple and almost a side note to the game. The cut scenes are animated differently giving it a cartoon quality which adds to the feeling of separation between game play and story. This soundtrack works really well mixing the sounds of traffic on the street with a subtle abient background track. The game as a whole works well for all the dissection that can be done to it and only loses points on the basis that this was a trial almost on the developers part as this has to be one of the most innovative and original ideas to come to the next-gen consoles, so you can forgive them for being wary and making this game shorter and simpler than I would have liked. More games are in the pipe works so I have no doubt this will all be built upon. A solid game that fills you with satisfaction when you nail it.

Like dating a beautiful idiot. Great to look at and fun to play with, but will grow old and make you want something with more substance next time. It is a great ride, but leaves you unsatisfied by the end and wanting A LOT more. The main problem is the fact you are playing an unlikable charactor, working with unlikable charactors and the controls are rubbish, which lead to many, many mistakes, but dont worry, the game wants you to do this and not have any fun so hey ho. Rent and move on to another. If it were a movie it would be a straight to DVD comedy with the voice of Bart Simpson as the main attraction.

after having played this game extensively, i must admit this game is not one for the faint heart. At first it's easy to get into and takes a while to get used to the controls, once you have done that it's plain sailing from there. The game and graphics feel innovative and fresh and certainly alot bright than most games FPS camera. I have enjoyed putting time and effort into this gmes and certainly one of the better titles released last year. There is plenty of play to be had for the casual gamer and there is more than enough content for the hardcore. i would highly recomend purchasing this game at the prices that it's currently selling at and if you enjoy it like i have it's certainly worth inveting in the time trial pack from the PSN to breath more life into the title.

I was really hoping this was going to be better than it turned out to be. Sure, the free running parts of the game are, for the most part, fantastic and the graphics look great. I struggled not to go "Woooo" as i traversed from building to building. The problem is that's pretty much it for this game. The environments all look very similar and the combat is more of a chore than actually enjoyable, often needing reflexes of a cat to disarm opponents. I wouldn't say it's an easy game, you'll find yourself scratching your head on occasions wondering how to get to, what looks like, an unreachable area! The plot is less than immersive but the game as a whole is mostly fun and an original idea, but just feels a little like the developers rushed it rather than make the game the best it could be with more 'wow' moments.
