Dementium: The Ward (DS) Description

Waking up in an unusual location isn't exactly unfamiliar territory to any seasoned party-goer; strange houses, gardens, sofas, the occasional alleyway... None of these compare to the events experienced in Dementium: The Ward, however. The game describes the tale of a man that wakes to find himself alone in a mysterious, derelict hospital. Worse still, the old place is frozen in time. Our unlucky protagonist isn't going to be keeping company with confused old ladies or screaming kids with broken limbs during his time at Redmoor Hospital. Instead, while wandering the halls, he is confronted by the deadly, grotesque products of the hospital's sickening surgical experiments. Gotta hate it when that happens! Through a series of challenging puzzles and a cast of bizarre characters, he must face his deepest fears, unlock the mysteries of the hospital, and escape with his life. Dementium brings a blend of first-person shooter and survival horror to the Nintendo DS, using the same control system created for Metroid. Gory visuals and bone-chilling audio bring Redmoor Hospital screaming in to life, promising a game that will give you the creeps . Time to put on those headphones and settle down for a nice quite night in...

This game shows the importance of a good plot in survival horror games. Things start off well with you dropped straight into the action, but without a developing story you are left exploring similar looking corridors and meeting the same 3 or 4 monsters again and again. This is a shame because the controls are well thought out, and the sound is good too, but without a good story to hook you in, there's little incentive to continue playing.

Maybe it's just me, but first person shooters just don't seem to work on the DS. It all seems a bit clunky moving your perspective around with the stylus; even with Metroid Prime: Hunters, which is recognised as one of the greatest DS games out there, I just couldn't get on with it. I should say that the ambience in this game is fantastic, and the experience is spooky as it can be on a tiny screen. If you're a fan of FPS Metroid, or 'Moon', then definitely give this game a go.
