LittleBigPlanet (PS3) Description

Life ain't easy when you're made out of sack, but that sure doesn't mean it can't be fun! LittleBigPlanet is a... well, it doesn't really fit into any category you ever heard of, so we'd probably best just describe it. We'll start with the more recognisable stuff - platforming. LittleBigPlanet comes packed with over 50 levels of traditional platforming goodness. Well, we say traditional, but don't expect it to feel like any other platformer you ever played. It comes in 2.5D, so it captures that classic side-scrolling feel while still offering a bit of depth to play with. What really sets it apart, however, is the physics and the ingenious level design. Everything moves as you'd expect it to, which can make for some interesting playing when you're trying to manoeuvre a mine into a blockage on a jetpack! Throw in co-op play and you've got a pretty rich experience right there! What really makes LittleBigPlanet unique, however, are the creation tools. Players are given an absolutely huge array of materials and tools to work with. We've seen everything from a working calculator to a level that recreates the Final Fantasy X song 'To Zanarkland' The best thing about all that is that players can upload their creations to the PlayStation Network for all to enjoy, meaning you should never run short of new stuff to play with. Plus, LittleBigPlanet's so darn cute (and crisp) that it'll make your teeth dissolve just from looking at it!

Once every so often a games publisher comes up with an idea so bonkers it just might work, well with LBP its happened again! Its truly something special and one game I think everyone should own for PS3. Regardless of age, everyone can enjoy LBP, sure the basic levels are cute and it is almost like getting from one side of the screen to the other, but isnt that what Sonic and Mario did for years?? Where I think LBP sets itself aside is the customisation of almost every part of it. Your little Sackboy can wear hundreds of different outfits you collect by playing the training levels on the disc (about 50 levels) you can also then go buy outfits from PSN for a mere 70p each and have your sackboy look like a norse god or a character from Ico or better still dressed in a sharksuit with a frying pan in your hand! (what my sackboy looks like!) It gives you that ability to toally invent the sackboy you want and use him through all the levels, I never tire at seeing a sackboy jumping for a ledge dressed in a rubber sharksuit! Aside from the sackboy outfits there is the ability to design your own levels offline and then play them so if your into designing levels then this can really help you while away the hours, even putting in photos to place on levels using the PS3 camera can spice them up for you. But ultimatly this game excells on the community levels, every player can design and upload levels to the PSN and they then become available for everyone else to play, you may think this ends up in a ton of unplayable "woo, Im dave and I rock" type levels but alot of people take this serious and the theme of levels can range from other games characters to all time classis films, Level of Back to the Future 2 anyone?? Endless amounts of levels are there to be played and more and more keep appearing. All in all a great game for anyone to play alone, also a good couples game and well worth the rent and buy!!

reading some of the reviews of LBP had me thinking, what are these people on about? LBP is a truely revolutionary game that offers what no other game can. the freedom to not only make your dream creation (and i mean you can make any dream you want a reality with this game) but then publish it online for others to play while you play there levels! the story mode is fun and you will be playing through it, whether its alone or with friends online or offline to find every object in the game which you can then use in your own creations. now for the main feature, the building level tool itself. this is quick tricky to master and without the expertly implemented tutorials voiced by stephen fry you would be left flailing, attaching rocket boosters to bits of wood and watching them fly around the room destroying your creation as you try and build a simple rocket powered skateboard. once you know what your doing, thats when the fun begins. you can build ANYTHING. a space shuttle, a volcano, the ocean, the list is endless. if you can imagine it, you can build it. DLC is frequently added and while most of it is useless, just costumes and stickers there are afew packs out there that are really good. you simply must play this game.

I do feel harsh giving this game only two stars, though I'm guessing this is the kind of game that was never intended for my agegroup anyway so it is as much my problem as the games. It is a relatively simple platform gamer that will definately interest the younger gamers (like 11yrs and below) though is definately not the game for you if you like tough puzzles as this game is simply a matter of getting from begining to end without landing on spikes. I suppose I'm just a sonic boy at heart!

I owe LBP and haven't rented it... so why the review... well I'd advise EVERYONE to rent it. This is such a divisive game - I love it, but I can see why some might hate it. So - Good things - I enjoy the level editor, even though it's VERY hard work to produce anything half-decent (I'm failing so far) and the actual game itself provides a few hours of really interesting platforming across a nice range of levels with some great fun moments (riding a dog in a B-movie horror wedding for example, or running along buffalo in place of moving platforms). There are some good levels available online and the multiplayer is very very slick, smooth and fun. Dressing your sackboy and outfitting him is also a laugh and is one of those rarities that might interest non-gamer partners. There are definately some downsides, downloadable content can be pricey (extra outfits and packs etc), and some of the games levels can be unforgiving thanks to the real physics involved. Also, to be honest, unless you want the level designed, or play online alot, then the single-player experience is quite limited. My advice would be to definately rent it.
