Far Cry 2 (PS3) Description

Far Cry 2 has a lot to live up to. The first Far Cry, developed by Crytek, was critically lauded among reviewers and loved by gamers the world over. Ubisoft Montreal has a lot to live up to. Fortunately, it's been working its French Canadian fingers to the bone to do just that. Breaking away from previous games in the series, players are whisked off to the wilds of Africa. The premise is simple - there's an arms dealer out and about going by the name of The Jackal. He's been playing local warring factions off against each other because... well, it's good for business. Your job is to take him out. Two things stand out about Far Cry 2. The first is the sheer size of the game. Players are presented with an open world that's a massive 50 square kilometres in total, all resplendent with detail. Second is just how much effort has gone into the design. Things work as they're meant to work. Take fire, for instance. If you're approaching a settlement you need to attack and the wind's at your back, setting the dry grass alight will serve you well, because the flames will blow towards your opponent and get your attack nicely underway. Try it with the wind blowing the other way, however, and you'll find yourself getting singed at least. All this comes complete with a full online multiplayer mode that packs all of the above into the opportunity to blow your mates' - and strangers - brains out.

After the abysmal Far Cry on the consoles, I was not expecting this game to be any good at all... however my doubts were completly unjustified. Far Cry 2 is an excellent game, you have the same freedom that you'd find in a grand theft auto game. An FPS open world game is an great concept and it really is a great blast to play. The only problem I have with this game is the actual shooting segments. I've played a hell of a lot of FPS games, and for some reason it seems really hard to actually hit/kill characters in Far Cry 2. 90% of the time I ended up having to knife my prey as my weapons seemed to be shooting jelly. Maybe it was the weapons I was using? You'll get more out of this game if you like exploring, and tracking down all the diamonds in the game is a great task if you're a fan of that kind of thing. Having to constantly battle Malaria is a great aspect of the game also and keeps you from straying too far off the beaten track. Except for my minor gripes with the shooting element of this FPS, it's a very good game and if you're a fan of map editing, you will be in creation heaven!! Diamonds aren't forever, they're till you need a new gun.

Far Cry 2 is a real mixture. The graphics are stunning and gameplay, while not outstanding, is good and solid. There is a loose story line which never really dominates play and the shooting itself is very satisfying and well implemented. vehicles are fun to drive and missions offer a good variety of tasks and objectives for you to complete. there are a variety of weapons for you to use from the simple pistol to heavy machine guns that chomp up scenery and bad guys like a blender. The game world is quite simply massive and even after 10+ hours you will still find yourself visiting places you've never been to before. And this is where the games real problems lie. while having such a big area to play around in is fun it can also get more than annoying. bus stops are scattered across the map which take you directly to other stops but a simple fast travel option like that used in oblivion would make the game so much more appealing. getting from one side of the map can easily take an hour as you will frequently find yourself being bullied off the road by enemies in jeeps and driving through enemy camps which cannot be avoided wil almost certainly leave you with a blown up jeep, a hell of alot less health and ammo and most importantly less patience with a game that never reached its full potential. If you can live with these annoyances then there is a good game here with realistic shooting and real world physics that are yet to be beaten. the large map offers hours of exploration and tasks such as searching for all the games hidden diamonds alongside a fairly decent multiplayer can keep you playing for at least 30 hours. the PC version offers a comprehensive map moding tool and map packs have been released for ps3 and 360 owners since the games release. Far Cry 2 is a good game which could have been made great if the developers thought twice about some features and implemented some fairly obvious ones. definately worth a rental and at swapgames price a real bargain of a buy!

I feel that if this game let you warp to different locations on it's dense map then half of the play time would be gone. You spend so long in a battered old jeep/car/buggy it gets to be more boring than real driving. There are a lot of enemy outposts which you can choose to clear from enemies. It was sometimes a bit broken, i found if i went in and totally destroyed everything it wouldn't register that i'd cleared it from bad guys. But if i took them all out with gunshots it would, and even then i had walk round the whole outpost! Annoying! Add to that the fact that even if you do clear it, the enemies come back when you pass though again....pointless! This is on of a few little niggles with the game. Nothing was more frustrating than driving for 10 minutes only to be killed and then having to do it all over again! Totally lost interest in the story, you can have allies help you out (all they do is rescue you once if you're close to death, they don't offer anything else) but it usually takes a lot of driving to sort all that out before the mission. Driving places will become something you want to avoid at all costs! It looks stunning and has moments of greatness. But the flawed gameplay, awful lag online and no 4-player multiplayer on one console really stops it from being worth a purchase.
