Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PSP) Description

Have you ever wanted to be a secret Sith apprentice, hunting down the last remnants of the Jedi order for Darth Vader as you hone your skills with the Force? That's the basic premise of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed from Lucas Arts, a game that will give you more control over the Force than any other game before it. Set between the movie trilogies and created in collaboration with both George Lucas and Industrial Light and Magic, the game will take you from one end of the Star Wars galaxy to the other in your quest. You will have access to four Force powers - push, grip, repulse and lightning - that will enable you to destroy anybody or anything that stands in your way. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed uses new and exciting technology to make your game more involving. Physical objects react as you would expect them to; dropping, breaking and blowing up in a natural way. In addition, humans and other creatures react to events around them in dynamic, non-scripted ways that mean that no two games will play exactly the same. Also, you will be able to change the path of the story by decisions you make during the game, creating multiple endings that promise to reveal surprising twists in the Star Wars continuity. The secret apprentice will be accompanied in his adventure by a droid companion called PROXY and an Imperial pilot cadet called Juno Eclipse who pilots your starship, the Rogue Shadow, and with whom the apprentice will have a love interest during the course of the story. The game of The Force Unleashed is one part of a multimedia project that encompasses a novel, a graphic novel, a set of miniature figures, a reference book, a line of collectible toys and an expansion to the Star Wars role-playing game.

Wow! What do we have here? A very, very good Star Wars game for the PSP. Games that have absorbed me this much on the PSP have been few and far between, so anyone who is either a Star Wars fan, or who just likes a good action game where you get to be a "powerful dude" so to speak - this is for you. Best of all - it's a completely different game for the most part from it's HD brothers on the PC and consoles. I've also played those (and reviewed them - check them out) and those were also great games. As it's been scaled down for the PSP, you have what is really the same basic story threading through both this and it's HD brothers, but the PSP has completely different level design and structure, puzzles, character design, force power selection etc. The graphics are really very nice for a PSP title - not the best, but still very good. The environments are nice and colourful and varied, though admittedly sometimes it can feel too linear, with very narrow paths and single corridors to navigate. A little more open space and choice about where you go would have been nice, but I understand that the platform is limited, which is likely why the game is the way it is. No matter, it didn't ruin the game for me, it was just noticable. The sound effects are just what you expect from a Star Wars game - suitably swooshy and whirry lightsaber sounds, the familiar trill of blaster fire, the whines from the engines of vehicles and space craft. It's all here, and it really helps immerse you in the very good story. And that's the next good thing - the story. Actually very well written for a game, I really think most Star Wars fans would give it the thumbs up... apart from the really, REALLY geeky beardy ones... I won't spoil it, but let's just say you get to see some interesting events with familiar characters in the events leading up to the films episodes... Overall - this is must have stuff for PSP owning Star Wars fans, and any PSP owner who wants a good, absorbing action game in their collection. May the Schwartz be with you.
