Saints Row 2 (PS3) Description

You used to be the Big Man. You used to be King of the Hill. You used to sit atop a great big stinking pile of dirty money, while everyone around you looked up in respect. You were the boss. But those days are gone. Now, you're waking up in a hospital bed after spending five years in a coma because your peeps betrayed you. It's gonna be a long road back to the top. Such is the start of Saints Row 2. First up, you'll need to set about customising not just your character, but their crib and their crew, too. Image is everything on the streets, so you'll need to look the part. Then you'll need to set about taking back a much-changed Stilwater, with blood, guts and guns. And, you know... private jets, speedboats, helicopters and fighter planes. The usual. You'll need them to get around, because Stilwater's a big old open world. Because no man is an island, and you can't be a gang leader without a gang, you'll be able to have a buddy watch your back in co-op play right through the single-player campaign. Also, because you can't rule a city without killing a bunch of people, you'll be able to shoot it out in competitive online multiplayer for up to 12 guys. Remember what happened in the original Saints Row, and watch your back...

Saints Row is undoubtedly a GTA clone - but it happens to be one of the very few that is actually a great game in it's own right. The city you have to explore is fairly large, but nothing on the scale of GTA IV's Liberty City. Following on from the first Saints Row, you're back on the bottom rung of the ladder again, and it's time to fight your way to the top. It's predominantly the same Stilwater from the first game, but it has different buildings and such that have changed and developed in the assumed time lapse since the last game. There's also the addition of a new island off to the east containing a power station, so this adds a little more to the map. As in the first outing, it's pretty much GTA ramped up to ridiculous levels of tongue in cheek humour, crazy over-the-top action and gang warfare aimed at re-taking the city. There is a huge variety to the side missions which keeps things really interesting. The ever popular insurance fraud mode makes a welcome return, and has you throwing yourself in front of traffic at junctions to cause as much money's worth of damage as possible. Hilarious fun. Your character is as customisable as ever, as well as the cars you drive, and you'll have no end of possibilities to make your character look the way you want. I was rather partial to the Borat swimsuit myself, making my character as fat as possible... heh. Like the evolution of the GTA III series on the last generation of consoles, this Saints Row sequel has progressed to the skies. You can fly various vehicles around, and there's lots of fun to be had doing so. The music and sound in the game is excellent, and they have done a good job at mimicking GTAs amusing radio station chatter and fictional adverts for hilariously named products (anyone fancy a "fist"? you'll get it when you play it ha ha). The multiplayer is well integrated, and you can either have a co-op through the missions, with friends helping you complete them in the main story, or you can just have an online open city free-for-all, which is great fun if you have 4 team players in one single car, all firing out at your enemies like a moving tank. Course fun though this is, you present a great single target to your enemies, and if you're on the side that's firing at a car full of enemies all at once, it's extremely gratifying to take out so many people at once. Overall, Saints Row is becoming just about as much a must-have game series as the mighty GTA. It's open world, interesting missions, amusing not-taken-seriously story and engaging multiplayer will keep you busy for a long time. Definitely a must-buy.

This was a better game than I expected. At first I thought that this was going to be a washout and nowhere close to the grand theft auto series. The graphics are not as good but then I realised that it did not matter. The story was a bit more interesting as gangs are exterminated completely. Whereas in GTA the gangs are still around after there bases and leaders are obliterated, so Saints row is more realistic there. Also the game is longer than you might expect and there are many activities and extra jobs to do as well. Plus you can customize your cribs and character and there is a wide variety of weapons to entertain yourself with. So If you think GTA is the best by a long way than try this game and think again.

This game just tries to hard. It isnt bad, but it just isnt what I hoped. The controls arnt very good, the graphics arnt very good and the framerate frequently dips. That said the game is pretty funny and obviously not to be taken seriously. You start breaking out of a prision which is pretty easy, then do some missions which are all pretty easy and nothing is a challenge. If this appeals to you then youll get more out of it than me, but The Godfather1/2 and GTA 3/VC/sa/4 are way better.

I rented this game not knowing at all what it was like and i'm glad i did! It was a real joy to play. It doesn't take itself too seriously, meaning driving, flying, shooting, fighting....infact all of it was more enjoyable than GTA IV in my opinion. Theres a lot of customisable options, from what your character looks like, to how your hideouts look. You can even have your gang dress up like ninjas! How cool's that!? You need to forget all that GTA has done for the genre and just have fun with this instead of trying to look for flaws that GTA does better. Get it!
