Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3) Description

This is it. The conclusion to one of the most revered series of games in history. Enough hype for you? Well, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is nothing if not highly anticipated. The game rounds out Hideo Kojima's epic story of Solid Snake, tying up all those niggling loose ends from previous games. The action takes place in a battle-scarred future in which huge multi national corporations battle for control using carefully chosen mercenaries (and big ol' robots) to do their bidding. Let's face it, we all know society's heading that way, so Kojima's already off to a good start. We see this world through the tired eyes of an aged Solid Snake, who must travel from the Middle East, to Europe and to South America to infiltrate key locations and, you know, win the day. As ever, the emphasis is on stealth, with Snake creeping through his missions to complete tasks with the minimum possible violence. In fact, the greatest reward you can reap is for completing the game with zero kills. That's none. Who says games encourage violence? The game is a deep, meaty and beautiful epic. In fact, the single player experience has so much to it that the multi player aspect has its own title – Metal Gear Online. The online component allows up to 16 players to compete in stealth combat, with teamwork heartily encouraged. The game has many levels. On the one hand, it's a meditation on war, politics, society and what makes us tick. Don't forget, however, that it's also a rollicking shoot 'em up with painstakingly rendered graphics.

Brilliant conclusion to the metal gear solid series. I have played them all so it had a lot to live up to. Great ending to the story with an all battle and some unexpected surprises along the way. Third person shooter makes it a little bit more varied but there should have times, like in the other titles where you are discovered and game over. Great action and it livres up to expectations. Just two criticisms. Why is the movie at the end 45 minutes long. Plus why did it have to end here. It would have been nice to see it carry on with Raiden. To see a series like this end is sad. All everyone can hope for is that someone in he development team takes over. Worth playing and buying. If you have never played MGS1,2 or 3 though the story mught not make much sense.

This installment of the series had me feeling very confused about the way the franchise is heading. Throughout the other MGS titles, the game kind of dictates how you need to play in order to progress through each level. This for me adds an element of stability and structure to the gameplay. With MGS 4 however, you can pretty much do whatever you want to complete each level which is a good concept at first but if you get too sucked into the guns and the shooting, the game becomes very repetitive, drawn out and even confusing. I am a big fan of the game though and love the graphics, gun customisation and just the sheer amount of weapons made accesible to Snake throughout the campaign. I just feel that from a story mode point of view there is still something missing from the gameplay. I dont like to be spoon fed throughout campaigns but i feel that with a strong emphasis being on this games storyline (over 2 hours of cut scenes!) it would be nice if stealth was the only way through some missions. Overall, an expected, enjoyable game but for me it is stuck in the middle of two genres (stealth/espionage and shoot-em up) and unless it can combine these two in a more fluid and useful way, it will run out of steam the 5th time round.

Deffinately the best game on the PS3, utterly brilliant. Amazing graphics and a compelling story that fantastically ends the story of Snake.

An amazing sequel to a great series. Personally I have not played any of the other games, yet I hear they're great. So this game is good for dedicated Snake fans and people who need to be introduced to this series. The gunplay is excellent, yet it does not take away from the stealth factor that dominates a well written game, that has you on the edge of your seat. The cut-scenes our long, making up a few hours of the game. Perfect, as good, if not better than any other PS3 game.
