Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures (DS) Description

Did you used to spend hours wondering what it would be like if, in the opening sequence of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones had to evade a tumbling ball of LEGO instead of rock (or possibly papier mache, depending on what they were using for the special effects back then)? No? Was that just us...? Well, in any case, Traveller's Tales has answered the question for us with Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures. In a nutshell, Indiana Jones and his supporting cast have been given the same treatment as the Star Wars crew - they've been made all blocky. Players get to re-enact the entire first three Indy films as characters made out of LEGO in a LEGO environment faced by threats made out of LEGO. Get the gist? So, it's off to the jungles of South America, the mountaintops of India and even the home of the Holy Grail with everyone's favourite fedora-wearing archaeologist adventurer. Along the way, players will have the help of Dr Jones' supporting cast, including the likes of Marion Ravenwood and Short Round. Players will be able to swap between them at will, even combining body parts to create brand new heroes. If you like your adventures to come in customisable brick form, this one's for you.

Da da da daaaaaa, da da daaaaaaaaaa, da da da daaaaaaaa, da da daa daa daaa etc etc.... It's about time we got some decent Indy games isn't it? Remember those very poor early effort movie tie-in games? Well yes, they were awful, and actually, these days it isn't much different, but occasionally you get a movie license game that actually delivers. And so, Lego Indiana Jones does just that. It's a wonderful nod to the original trilogy of films, with lots of plastic bricked humour mixed in for good measure. Like it's original Star Wars cousin, this film pulls tricks like recreating memorable film scenes within the game itself, as well as in the clever little cutscenes that are often literal imitations of the original film, recreating accurate scenery, character position, camera angles etc, as well as mixing in some of that Lego humour to spice it up a little. The cut scenes actually reminded me of the early Worms games sometimes, but I digress... The gameplay consists of many similarities between it's Star Wars cousins again. There are buildable objects and character specific entry points on certain levels where you will find all sorts of collectable goodies for the completists out there. You will only ever be able to get into some areas with one specific character, so it makes good use of its selection to ensure you use each one of their special abilities. You'll pretty much traverse the story and familiar stand-out scenes from the trilogy throughout the game, and it is surprisingly big for a DS game. I must have put 15 hours into at least so far, and I still haven't got every single thing. This is a very recommendable DS game as it reaches all audiences. My wife enjoyed playing this one as much as I did.
