Rock Band (PS3) Description

The winning triumvirate of inspired music game designers at Harmonix, the showbiz industry moguls at MTV, and the gaming industry behemoth that is Electronic Arts bring us the ultimate music creation/rock god-aping title: the simply and ingeniously entitled Rock Band. Not just a guitar or a microphone, but a whole band, see? Rock Band is a game in which up to four players - be they in the same room or online together in cyberspace - can jam on drums, lead guitar, bass guitar and vocals. In short, it's the full band experience* (* that's as in rock band, not some harpsichord or viola-powered recital). The game comes with a whopping great song list, predominantly made up of original master recordings, and doesn't stop there. There's also a constantly evolving library of songs available to download for the PS3 version. The Rock Band setlist for PlayStation 3 features:
  • Rolling Stones 'Gimme Shelter'
  • Aerosmith 'Train Kept a Rollin''
  • The Who 'Won't Get Fooled Again'
  • Boston 'Foreplay/Long Time'
  • Mountain 'Mississippi Queen'
  • The Police 'Next to You'
  • David Bowie 'Suffragette City
  • '

ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL - You might think that you are too mature for plastic intstruements, you might think it is a waste of time, but similar to a particular brand of biconcave potato snacks once you start you just can't stop. I have yet to meet anyone that hasn't been converted by Rock Band. At a party it doesn't take long until even the biggest technophobes are playing along, and that surely is the biggest seal of approval for the game. It is incredibly fun and instantly playable, although tough to master. The song choices are varied enough to please most and doesn't fall down like Guitar Hero III by having a set list entirely for disaffected american emos. There are fewer "insane" solos in Rock Band than guitar hero III however, in a similar vane to GHII, the timing windows are tighter and there is if anything more skill required to 100% songs as you have to be more in time with the music. For those however that find the guitar career too easy (i did), there is the new option of playing the drums. If the game only included the drums i'd still buy it. They are so much fun, and it feels much more organic and authentic playing the plastic drums to a song than a fisher-price stratocaster. The challenge is certainly ramped up on the drums with songs like run to the hillls and Queens of the Stone Age's Go With the Flow taking quite a beating. There isn't a weak area of the game and for those who don't like the songs packaged (how could you not?) there is a HUGE DLC library to choose from. It is impossible not to be satisfied by this game, even your girlfriend will play.

The best music franchise out there. Makes GH seem like a XNA game.
