Ferrari Challenge: Trofeo Pirelli (PS3) Description

Ferrari Challenge is System 3 taking a full throttle crack at the high-speed world of super car racing, complete with next-gen graphics and some gameplay elements that are brand-spanking new to the racing genre. Yes, it is indeed a racing game, just on the off-chance the title didn't give that away. It's a racing game that's all about Ferraris, so expect finely detailed visuals depicting fully licensed cars and great tracks and scenery. For newbies, the game offers a number of assists to help you get used to playing. Initially you can take a spin around the training track, where Tiff Needell will give you hints, encouragement, and the occasional admonishment. Once you've finished you'll be presented with a pretty comprehensive selection of marks to show how well you din in a range of categories such as apex accuracy and adherence to the racing line. The racing line is also an assist you can activate - and will be well advised to do so at least during your first few races. The line shows where on the track your car should be positioned, and the colour of the line changes from green, through yellow to red to indicate whether you should be accelerating or braking. if you follow the line and the throttle cues, you will not go far wrong. Once you feel that you've mastered the training track enough to move on, you are given the choice of several single player options, but the meat of the game is the Challenge Series, and you will have to progress through this to unlock the tracks and cars that enable you to progress through the game, and the challenges that give you targets to aim for as you do. Once you're done with that, you'll find a 16-player online feature to sink your teeth into. There is also a new feature called challenger cards, similar to Top Trumps, where you chose a statistic of a chosen car see if you... well, trump your opponent. You'll probably never own a Ferrari (sorry) but that doesn't mean you can't get the thrill of racing one.

One-make racing game which boasts rewarding and convincing driving and racing, outstanding rain effects (unlike a lot of games, they remembered the wiper animations), a good livery editor and some terrific tracks that we haven't seen before in a game (Circuit Mont-Tremblant, Virginia International Raceway and the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California and, for the first time in a long time for cars, Circuit Paul Ricard). There are some nice touches such as wildlife, leaves and men with flags (yay!) at circuits and a personal favourite music track over the main menu (Ebla by E.S. Posthumus). For me, the single marque is no limitation at all (indeed, I love single marque games) and the cars exhibit a wide variety of handling; some of them are an absolute joy to drive including the F512 S, F355 GTB, and the F40.
