Super Mario Advance 2 (GBA) Description

Try to stay calm, take a deep breath and take a look the screenshots of this conversion. Super Mario Advance 2 is a portable version of one of the best games of all time, Super Mario World. The game that made the SNES an essential purchase now returns the favour for the Advance. Imagine revisiting the platforming classic with new game features while you’re on the move. Absolutely amazing. The story of Mario Advance 2 is one of the most timeless in videogame history, and that is probably because of the success of the original Super Mario Bros: Save the princess. Bowser, aka King Kooper has captured the beloved Princess Daisy, or Peach, and is holding her in his castle. Mario must battle through up to 96 challenging levels to find and rescue her, taking out the seven mini-bosses on route. Maybe it was the difference between 8 and 16-bit consoles that made Mario look so special, or Shigeru Miyamoto’s magical touch to the gameplay that made this game a modern gem. It’s difficult to quantify the reasons why Mario is so good, but regardless, it balanced addictive, challenging gameplay with fun and plenty of hidden secrets thrown into the mix for good measure. Many levels had secret locations that required skill and dedication to find. Remember trying to fly underneath the flagpole? New to the Mario Series is Yoshi, a cute dinosaur that could power-up by consuming the various different coloured turtles. For example eating blue turtles enabled flight, and red turtles could be used to breathe as fireballs. Each level had its own unique surprises and challenges, and mastering each one is a pleasure. The hidden special stages offer new heights of platform difficulty. Super Mario Advance 2 lets players choose between Mario and Luigi at the map screen. In this version, Luigi is more than the two-player equivalent of Mario, he has his funny, wiggly legs and hover jump from Super Mario Advance. This small addition changes the way that you can play the game. A welcome touch. Like the first Mario Advance game, also included on the cartridge is the original Mario Bros. This game has been slightly revamped, and offers four-player simultaneous support, simple but fun with three friends. Super Mario Advance 2 is yet another essential purchase, and another reason to own an Advance.

While the original Mario Advance was a port of the worst Mario game ever, Nintendo make up for it with this sequel, which is a port of the brilliant Super Mario World. This is easily the best Mario game, and rather than losing some of its appeal by coming to the small screen, there are plenty of bonuses and unlockables that help it improve on it's SNES ancestor. Firstly, the sound and graphics have been improved; Mario/Luigi are now full of catchphrases and noises, which adds more life to the game than the old bloppy noises. There are special coins and eggs to find which give you access to bonus levels and little moments that show off the GBA's superiority over the SNES. The game itself is good old Mario World and will always remain one of the most playable, colourful and enjoyable 2D platformers ever. The best bit of the original Mario Advance has also made it into this cartridge, and that's the brilliantly chaotic Mario Bros game, which is best played with 3 friends (only 1 cartridge needed!). If you have a GBA and want to play a game that does the Mario phenomenon justice, then look no further.
