Grand Theft Auto 3 (PS2) Description

Grand Theft Auto is one of the most controversial series of games ever made, due to its questionable content. Not many games deal with the subject of carjacking, running people over, and escaping the attentions of the police. But, we’re all responsible people here, we all know that we shouldn’t do this for real, and we can avoid the temptation, right? The third version of Grand Theft Auto is now available for the PlayStation 2. Say goodbye to the classic 2D top-down perspective and say hello to glorious 3D third-person action. In GTA3 you’ve been betrayed and left for dead. Naturally, revenge is high up on your personal agenda. Finding out what happened and deciding what you are going to do about it is your main goal. GTA3 combines a structured narrative with non-linear gameplay. This means that even though there are objectives that have to be met: how you go about them is left up to your discretion. In GTA3, you need to earn respect from the mafia bosses by performing jobs for them. This can lead you into the criminal underworld of stealing and selling cars, taking out rival gang members and bombing designated targets. Every single vehicle in the ‘living’ Liberty City is accessible and controllable, from ice-cream vans, to fire trucks, to a wide assortment of sports cars. Vehicle damage is another new feature to the series. A total of seventeen damage zones can be affected by your hazardous driving. Talking of new features, your notoriety rating will increase with the variety of different crimes that you commit. In the first two games in the series, you could have a maximum of four cops on your tail if you were causing mayhem. In GTA3, first the number of cops chasing you increases, then they bring in SWAT teams, the military, and finally helicopters are called in. With over three hours of music, loads of brand new gameplay features, and an all new perspective, GTA3 is the dark side of gaming personified. Excellent.

I'll never forget the time when I first put GTA 3 in my playstation and saw the 3D city. It was the first game I played to successfully create a living, breathing 3d urban environment, and I was impressed. So what if the hero of the game is a mute thug? The city alone was enough to blow me away. Fortunately, the good stuff doesn't end there; the story is a great homage to the most famous crime films ever made, and the humour of this game is dark and brilliant. Some of the side-missions are extremely fun as well; I specifically remember the taxi driving missions prompting me to sell my copy of 'Crazy Taxi', as GTA allowed you to get out of the car and beat your fare to death with a baseball bat. The violence in this game is ever-present, though all the civilians, characters etc. are such comical stereotypes of human beings that it doesn't feel disturbing; going on a murderous rampage has never been so much fun! While it's hard to fully remember the impression this game made on me, I remember it was an incredible one, and if you're not afraid of some ugly graphics by today's standards, I fully recommend anyone to give the game that made GTA an international phenomenon a go.

finally GTA takes the step up from 2D to 3D and my god what a step it is. arguably the best PS2 game of all time and arguably even the best game of all time GTA 3 offered what very few games had been able to do before, a free roaming world where you controled what you wanted to do and when. its the typical, start off with nothing and rise to greatness storyline but its told so well you wont mind the cliches and will instead be drooling over the non stop action and the thought that after playing for about 10 hours there is still more to be seen. much more. if you follow the story line without taking on any side quests then theres a good game here with about 15 hours of game time but if you decide to take on all the side quests, find every secret, collect every car, buy everything and complete the game 100% then you will be looking at around 100 hours of carnage! GTA 3 is a game that just keeps giving and having played all GTA games, before and after 3, i personally think this is the best of the lot. stop reading reviews and buy this now!
