VIKING: Battle For Asgard (PS3) Description

The olden days were bad times for some. Especially for those whose Gods are looking to engage in an all out war that spills over onto the mortal coil. And especially for those who lived in places that were really, really cold. Unfortunately for the inhabitants of Viking: Battle for Asgard, both things apply. Yes, things have been getting a bit heated up in Asgard. The goddess Hel, daughter of that old trickster Loki, has been kicked out of the heavenly realm, and she ain't happy. She's so unhappy, that she's seeking to release the ancient wolf god Fenrir. Legend tells that he'll bring about Ragnarok, the apocalyptic battle that will destroy Asgard and the gods. So, army of undead viking warriors in tow, off she marches on Midgard. Don't worry, though! Freya, goddess of love and wisdom is on the case! She appoints Skarin, a troubled warrior, to sort things out. That's where you, the player, step in. As Skarin, players will step up in epic hack and slash style to rid the world of undead vikings and keep Ragnarok in its bottle. To get the task done, they'll need to free the living vikings to help them. So, off players will trot. Rescue your fellow vikings and you'll have a Legion to defeat. Defeat the Legion and maybe a couple of other tasks and you'll meet the battle conditions and be ready to take your men to war. Dragons will flap overhead, shamen will cast ominous spells and lots and lots of bloodshed will follow.

Viking: Battle for Asgard is an odd one. The more I played it the more I liked it. To begin with I wanted to give it up, but held on and boy am I glad I did. It gives the apperance of being open world, but until you have done the missions in the order it wants you to, then you will die as they over crowd and constantly re spawn enemies in places you shouldent be yet. The story is good, the gameplay is brutal and the graphics are well above what I expected. I finished this game at 6 in the morning as I was hooked. Criminally underated. 9.5/10

Quite an enjoyable slash fest. You roam around a world completing different tasks to advance in the game and add to your moves list. It's nothing special visually and the game gets repetetive quickly. Luckily the fighting is great. Slicing the head off an enemy grunt never gets old, but don't think you can take a whole army on yourself like the Dynasty Warriors series. You do need to try to attack on a handful at a time otherwise it's Valhalla for you! Not to sound like a masochist, rent if you want to vent a little bit of anger as its the combat that makes this game really satisfying to play.
