Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (PS3) Description

Okay, so what fans of realistic driving sims with a PS3 sitting in their living rooms are probably really waiting for is Gran Turismo 5. But you can't always get what you want. What you can get is a big old slice of Gran Turismo goodness at cut price with GT5 Prologue. So, what do you get? There are two main modes of play: Arcade and Event, and there are none of the traditional Gran Turismo driving tests or licenses to work through. Diving straight into Arcade mode is a good way to get familiar with the tracks and cars. There are five circuits: Suzuka, Fuji Speedway, Daytona Speedway, Eiger Nordwand (first seen in Gran Turismo HD Concept) and London - each of which can be played in some alternative form, either in reverse or via a different route. Arcade mode has Single Race and Time Trial options… yeah, all standard stuff, but you'd complain if it wasn't there. Event mode is more of a structured challenge. You start out with 3,500,000 credits, which is enough to buy one of the six cheapest cars from Prologue's full range of 40 cars. The chequered flag waves and you get to enter any of Prologue's eight C-class challenges, which include model-specific time trial challenges and races, and a mission race around the new Daytona Speedway track. Finish in at least third place on these events and you'll unlock eight B-class challenges. Do the same thing there and you'll be racing A-class events. Credits won in events can be used to buy new cars for your garage... yes, cars! Everything from Ferraris to Alfas to Lotusessess (our word) to Minis and TVRs are on offer. It might not be the full GT5, but it should keep you going.

Don't buy this game new! Honestly, just don't..... soooo many people bought it on release with their spanking new PS3s, and they found out that this just isn't a GT game, or even close, so they sold their copies, and now there are countless copies floating round with nothing to do, most being sold for a pittance. I can honestly say I don't know what they did with this game? I've loved the GT series since the first, and eagerly awaited this prologue, only to be bitterly disappointed. For starters, the menus were so godawful slow - seriously, it took more than 5 minutes just to navigate them and get a quick race going. I also found the car controls to be sluggish and imprecise - not what I've become accustomed to from Polyphony... It seems to me that this game was just rushed out (and THAT'S an understatement!) in order to give PS3 only-owners something to brag about whilst the 360 community enjoyed the awesome Forza 2. Well sadly, it was to polyphony's detriment, because it's the first time I've seen their awesome games take a serious knock.... Now I know it's supposed to be a "demo" for the main game, but the fundamentals should be there, particularly as this is a demo you buy, not a free one you download. At the very least, the functionality of the game and it's controls should be such that you get enjoyment from the game you paid good money for. And this just isn't.... The graphics are one thing that I can say are decent about the game. Car models are detailed and what environments there are do look nice. All in all, I would just avoid this if you love the GT series, as it will only spoil it for you. Wait for the full game in 2010 and lets just hope it's a lot better than this silly pointless prologue...

'Where's the rest of it?!' You may ask! For me, the best parts of the GT series were getting the licenses and once you've decided on one of the many cars the game has to offer, improving it by making it lighter, fitting a turbo, getting more power out of your engine until you have a real speed demon for a car! Sadly this doesn't exist in Prologue and for me that is what makes the game all the more enjoyable. It looks great and online is so-so, but there is still no damage if you go slamming into a barrier at 110mph. I'm hoping when the proper game comes out it'll be a lot better but on it's own, Prologue isn't worth it.

It's a good game. It's also enjoyable online but isn't as good or as much fun as Burnout....
